"MURDERED BY NOISE."
LAST LETTER OF THE SHOT MOTHER.
SECRET "LIFE:
Southend police have been unable to trace any relatives of Mrs. Hilda Weston and her daughter Joyce, who were found shot at their home, Whitegate, Prince Avenue. South end.
This was reported to the coroner, Mr. H. J. Jefferies, at the resumed inquest when a jury found that Mrs. Weston murdered her daugh- ter and committed suicide during temporary insanity.
Detective-luspector Wiffen maid that a man in court believed that Mrs. Weston was his wife, from whom he separated eight years ago.
"I have had a chat with him,' said Inspector Wiffen, and I am convinced that he is mistaken."
The coroner, however, decided to call the man, who said that he was George Weston, an inquiry agent," of Cornwall Road, Bayswater,
Not His Wife.
the
Mr. Weston, replying. coroner, said that he had seen neither the bodics of the women nor photographs. A photograph was produced, but Mr. Weston, after looking at it, said that it was not his wife.
Detective-Inspector Wiffen report. ed that records showed that Mrs. Weston in her younger days wan a variety artist, and she had adopt- ed the stage of Hilda Paget. She' was employed in reporting social functions for a Liverpool newspaper from 1912 to 1913.
It had not been possible to trace any records of her marriage, and no one had been found who knew that Mrs. Weston had a husband. It was not known when she was first known as Weston, but in 1920 she and her daughter were living in Heswell, Cheshire, and later at Pensby in that name. She was an overseer of the parish of Pensby.
"Everywhere," added Inspector Wiffen. Mrs. Weston appears, te have lived a secret and mecluded life, and nowhere did she tell people. of any relatives. No recent corres- pondence was found at the house, and there was a large quantity "of burned paper in one of the fire- places. It would appear that Mrs. Weston burned a number of docu- ments before her death.'
Letter and Plays, lospector Harris, who went into the bedroom after the tragedy, stated that Howers were pinned to the nightdresses of both women, and in a ding-room downstairs there, WAS.. black cat which iad been shot. lying dead in a basket. He found a letter among documents which included a number of playe.
This was handed to the Cordner, and it stated :---
I have failed because I Eave heen murdered soul and brain by the noise, noise, noise, day and "night, in the road outside, and the row all day and half into the night enused by people next door' slamming their doors like pistol shats both upstairs and downstairs as they came in one at a time, and this has been continuing until one o'clock in the morning,
I have lived throughout this day sitting in a quiet lane in the love- ly country which is so like my own country and an unlike these sordid chenp surroundings, but all in vain. My sleep-starved brain re- inses to art. I have tried drug- ging myself to escape from the hellish noise, only to wake up next day with a drug-sadden brain incapable of anything.
I hope the greedy, money-grub- -bing people who persuaded me to rome here to live by their lies that the traffic would go by un- noticed will live as I have lived and end as I have. I have neg- lected my home and myself trying to save the situation.
Will some one please bury my little cat and not just throw it out, and let my darling girl have, the flowers that I have placed on ber. She loved flowers and her life has been set in a rose garden of beauty until now. I wonder if some of you who have driven me to this will wish you had acted. otherwise.
Do not seek any relatives. I have none in the world, and I would not leave my daughter to fight alone. I am done. It is no so trying any more.. I am half crazy for the want of sleep and rest. I wonder if our spirits will haunt this place.
Inspector Harris added that at tached to the cat's basket was a nete instructing a neighbour, Mrs. Fuller, to bury it and to take a fern out of the dining-room for her trouble.
