The situation is obscure and giving rise to the wildest rumours, It is said that General Chen Tani Tong has refused to return to Cacton and is at variance with the Canton Government and the lenders of the Nauking reinforcements. However, since his special division, the Bird, is supposed to be returning to Canton, "and Canton has just sent him a large consignment of ammunition these report about the Commander-in-Chief may be dismissed.

On Saturday a wide circle of friends received with much regret the sad news of the death that morning of Miss Dulcie Christian, the eighteen-year-old daughter of Lieut.-Cal. W F. Christian, D.S.O., officer sainmanding Royal Artillery, and a prominent local

" IRONSIDES" LEVY ON
KWEILIN.
One cause of the currency crisis is that the Government, while re- fusing to cash the Canton notes, is washing large quantities of Nan. king Banknotes brought here by the Northern troops. People are com plaining bitterly and say that if AWANGTUNG TROOPS MOVING The Central Bank is cashing paper money at all, preference should be ven to its own notes. But in-
stead of doing this, the Government is taking the Nanking notes.
The Government delends itself shying that it is acting under orders from Nanking. The troops, just prior to their departure from Sanking for Cantou, were paid in bunknote on the understanding that there were to be redeemed with silver in Canton. But this state- nunt has not done much to albay popular indignation.

REGISTRATION OF MUI TSAIS.
(Continued frym Page 4.)
We concentrate our attention on the problemi of all problems, aa- y Mui-tsai and social evil. It is our heartfelt desire to fulfil our duty as citizens, to relieve poor.in- nocent girls of their misery and to warn their oppressors against law breaking. We cannot but hope that they will awaken to their duty to humanity and cease from doing evil. As long as the Mai-tsai system exists, it will be a blot on icture generations. It only remains for me to urge you to help uphold a good cause, "and spare no pains to support great principles, to win over more members to the Society. and if possible, to report every pos sible case of cruelty so that the enforcement registration of Mui- tsai may soon be an accomplished: fact?" ·
