OF A TYPHOON.

FINE FEAT OF SEAMANSHIP

AT HONG KONG.

SPORT FOR VIKINGS.".

How the recent typhoon a Hong Kong was ontmanoeuvred by bold and confident iramanship is described in an article sent to the Straits Times by Mr. "John Me- Donald, of Cape Town, headed Chasing the Typhoon's Tail." It is as follows:-

This is a sport for Vikings! We were due to leave Hong Kong at nine o'clock at night, but at mid- day up went the typhoon signal and the ships in the harbour were warned to leave their buoys and 50 to anchor in Typhoon Bay for the night.

On further inquiry the me- teorological superintendent stated that no ship should go south, as she would be running right into the typhoon, which was one of con having finished loading, we drop. siderable violence. Accordingly, ped anchors in the Bay at nine o'clock.

Down the Singapore Track. Meantime our captain had been in constant touch with the Weather Bureauregarding the past and turbance, and had plotted out a present history of the coming dis chart of its course, rate of travel, etc., with the result that in the small hours of the morning he be came convinced that the typhoon had curved round and, though it would strike Hong Kong, it would do so from a different angle and warning was first issued. direction to that shaped when the

On careful consideration the cap-. tain decided that he could get away down the Singapore track ahead of the typhoon- rnce it, in fact, but unless he took prompt action the preliminary skirmishes of the typhoon, in the shape of heavy squalls of wind and rain, would block his passage through the heads.

So, at four o'clock in the morn- steamed for the open sea, meeting. ing, up came our anchors and we

as expected, an hour or so cut the

preliminary squalls, showing clear- ly that any hesitation would have resulted in our being bottled up in the Bay. After four hours steaming our ship ran into smooth water, with blue skies and a light. breeze from almost the opposite quarter to the gale predictng the advent of the typhoon.

Lucky and Flucky.

It now remained to hear from L fellow ship what had happened in port after we left, and sure en-. "ough, about five o'clock the message came through Lucky and plucky deg! We were bottled up two. hours after you sailed and later were struck by the typhoon, getting

rare dusting. A big ship which had disregarded the warning to leave the buoys has broken loose.

Thus a happy blend of skill and experience had taken us racing southwards, getting a mere flick of the tail of the typhoon-descri^, bed officially, Landerstand, as a gale and heavy rain. Not the least interesting tale was told by the barograph, which showed heavy and steady drop as the typhoon approached and then, as As we had passed parallel Boon with the centre of the disturbance, up it went in an almost perpendi

cular line.

a

Once again, chasing the typ hoon's tail is sport for Vikings but it requires a Viking to be in command of the hunt!
