Sin-I have read with interest Waterman's " report in your
he quotes Mr. W. Logan at the last paper to-day, from which I notice
fête of the VeR.C. as having said:—, "Our accommodation is very limit- ed, but we do our best to provide spare for our members and their friends,"
Now if that is so, I query, what effort has the Committee made to provide more elbow space for the reserved arata at least! They could very well place these reserved seat numbers further apart thereby providing spectators with greater comfort. But, Sir, this would ab- viously cut down gate receipts very considerably. Of course, if it is the aim of the V.R.C. to extraet all thes can get from spectators regardless of their comfort or discomfort, then there is nothing more to be said.
Mr. Logan went on to say that the Governor and his party accupy identical sents. While this is 80,
it is very certain that the great in- convenience of being squashed in would not be experienced by His Excellency and party. The Com- mittee would see to that.
Now as regards the accusation I made apropos high rental asked from the Government for the use of the tank during the recent water crisis, I apologise to the V.R.C. if I was wrong, but wish to say that I was merely quoting what appear- ed in one of the local papers. At any rate, it is surprising that Mr. Logan should bave waited until a few days ago to contradict the state ment when he had arople opportu- nity of doing so long before I raised the question. BRUTAL, ASSAULT NEAR SEGAMAT.
A criminal appeal from the devi- sion of Mr. N. F. H. Mather, M.C.S., First Magistrate, Segamat, has been disposed of before Mr.
Justice McCabe Beny, in the Supre me Court, Johor Bahru. Three
ninys had been convicted of caus-
months ing grievous hurt to an old Malay woman, and sentenced to four
each. The appellants were repre sented by Mr. M. V. Pillai, and ! the Deputy Public Prosecutor, Mr. R. Moor, appeared to support the convictions.
rigorous imprisonment
"The evidence in the court below had been to the effect that the con- plainant was walking home from Segamat at about ten o'clock at night when she was attacked by the three accused and beaten with sticks, sustaining a broken arm." She recognised the accused by the light of a candle she was carrying.
The reason for the attack was that the had bailed out her son, i who had been arrested for running away with the first accused's wife. The defence in each case was an alibi.
Mr. Pillai atated that he confined the appeal to the questions of the conviction of the first accused, who, counsel submitted, took no part in the attack, and of the sentence.
Subsequently, however. Mr. Pillai did not proceed to argue against
the sentence.
After hearing counsel on both sides, his Lordship remarked that this was a very brutal and coward- ly attack. and he was glad to see that appellant's counsel had not pressed the question of the sen- fence.
The only real point in the appeal | was whether the conviction of the first accused could stand, and after careful consideration, his Lardship was of opinion that the conviction was a proper one and amply sup- ported by the evidence.
The appeal was therefore din- missed, the convictions and senten- res being affirmed.

Craigenzower juniors are tome to Taikoo. As was shown last something may happen again, but in any case I think that the hame team will manage to ket through. Civil Service should not have any difficulty in securing the points on their visit to Kowloon C.C. On their success of last week,
the Electric team will travel with confidence to the Kowloon Bowling Green Club, but the latter may upset their plans. The Yacht Club, at home, ought to be able to account for the Club de Recreio, whom they
frated away last week.
