Handling the Eggs, Eggs are usually laid on sheets of paper and kept in warm places. In spring the sheets are carefully handled. When the eggs turn black and the worms are ready to emerge, they are removed" to the rearing room. As the worms are, young, little space is required. They are usually kept in the farmer's bed- room in order to accelerate the hatching process. The bed of leaves is changed once a day.

For this purpose a net covered with leaves is placed over the worms at feeding time, just to allow them

Disease and Banditry. About half a million dollars worth of silk is being produced an nually. It is used locally for mak- ing either silk thread or piece goods. Silk pivec goods of superior quality, however, are imported from Shanghai.

Diseas and banditry have sadly interfered with this industry. The typhoon sweeping over the province caused, likewise, some damage done

Mesaro. Pentreath & Co. have forwarded us the following letter, dated July 17, from Messrs. Horn- As to the production of silk, this by, Hemery & Co., Liverpool:- year Fukien Has been able to main- The market has again fallen into tain its own. Although no definite aetate of inactivity, yesterday's figures on export of silk and silk closing prices in the London mar-piece goods from Tukien ket showing a decline of d. to. d., known, it is gratifying to note on balance.

that the total expor of silk and silk piece goods from China to for sign countries amounted to some 187.708,760 Hk. Tls, last year, representing a gain of nearly 20,000,000 Hk. Tis. when compared with the figure for 1927.

The American Questionnaire figures for the month of June, which came to hand on Friday last, caused an unfavourable view to be taken of the market, and prices consequently eueed off slightly.

Although the consumption is re- duced by 0,009 tons, stocks and afloat, show a reduction of 14,499 tons. The consumption figurę wus less than had been anticipated, but the principal weakness of the mar ket is the fear that the average consumption for the second half of 1020 may be less than the first half. This, combined with the apparent indifference in New York, has been responsible for the less optimistic views which are now current, and it remains to be seen whether the "..diversion of Eipments from America to the United Kingdom of three during the next two months will alter these views.

The American buyers will no doubt remain out of the market as long as they possibly can, but the situation may change to such an extent that they will be forced to acquire large quantities, which would induce considerable and sharp luctuations.

We give the American Question- nairo figures for June, and, for comparison, those for the month of May:

This shipment was therefore a triumph, for not only did the fruit

arrive sound but it sold relatively $12 well, considering the state of ma- turity, at 7. for a 10lb. box, while | 81190 with a little more care in packing it would not have been difficult to realise as much as half-a-guinea for the fruit.
