THE 'TAEL' TO GO,
[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
CANTON, Aug. “26, 2 The Provincial Government of Kwangtung has declared in a cir. cular announcement to the public that hereafter the financial unit for the Province will be the dollar in Central Bank of China notes, and not the taal or ounce in silver coin, From time immemorial the Chiocre merchants have always looked upon the **ounce
the standard financial unit. But the Govert. ment states that this method is cumbersome and is not in accord- ance with modern usage. It is not known how the merchants, who have been so accustomed to the other way of counting, will react to this Government order.

Ever since the fall in value of the Gentral Bank of Chinà notes con- sequent upon the inter-Kwang war, Government employees have been getting only 30 per cent, of their sklarics. This was a real hardstup for many people to whom the extra 20 per cent, means the difference between comfort and "pinching."
With this announcement came an edict abolishing the "30 per cent. silver and 40 per cent, banknotes for payment of taxes, From now on taxes will be the same as before the inter-Kwang war and the extra twenty per cent. will not have to be paid

A CATERING CONTRACT.
At the Summary Court yesterday, the Puiane Judge (Mr. Justice Wood) referred to the statements of a defendant as a pack of lies.
Both parties were Chinese, the plaintiff, merchant, claiming $100 as two months' rent due by the defendant in respect of the stenward's department of the 5.3. Charles Hardouin.
Plaintif conducted his own case and Mr. A. el Arculli appeared for the defendant.
According to the plaintiff, he held a licence from the company to cater for the food on board, and he let the defendant have the work on condition that he paid 8200 a month for rent, but the defendant said he was not called upon to pay rent and there was no agreement. He received no pay and he had to maintain the staff.

His Lordship said that if the defendant's story was true, plaintiff had defrauded the Com- pany. Why then should not Mr, Arculli support his case by getting evidence from the Company's offi vers? If the defence was that the contract was with the Company and not the plaintiff, the Company's
offrers would know about it.
