FALL HATS AND SPORTS SUITS.

I mentioned last week the delight ful woollen suits and new autumaa millinery which had then just ar rived at the Dolly Vardon Hat Shop; this week 7 want to describe a few of those that are left.

Very pleasing as a transition be- tween the summer and real autumn styles are some light-weight felta which have petal brims, and are trimmed with a scrap of lace ap pliqug in front surrounded with light braiding. This type of "trim- med hat is far more suitable for wear with cotton frocks' than the more severe lines of a plain sporta felt which you so often sec.

Felt and straw.are still friends and an admirable choice for early autumn, while the mode for bows can be scen

felta trimmed with grua grain, and pr models which have a bow of the felt itself, generally placed

right in front. But whatever your need, for a felt to wear now with summer frocks, for an early autumn hat to accompany a silk dress a sporta, model to top your jumper suit, you will find the ap propriate and chic hat at the Dolly

Vardon.

And the suits. They are even mare attractive than those of last spring which is saying a great deal. One real grass green three-piece suit has a thread of blue silk woven in narrow lines on the jumper, while a blue one has the jumper similarly trimmed with silk lines and knitted of shaded pol. These suits are all man-tailored on very smart lines, and made of the best quality wool. The colours are 'very pleasing indeed and not the least of their virtues is the fact that they keep in shape almost indefinitely.

Yourself and a Sale. Whiteaway, Laidlaw', in enle time is a perfect network of bargaini. Merchandise in alt departments is reduced. If we were to make a list of our per- sunal and household needa for the next few months and shop for them during the aule, the amount sared would be surpris- ing. Stockiugr are an item to buy in sales but be careful of colours, buy only soft neutrút shades. Other accessories hand- bagi," scarves, and lingerie touches-can be picked up to great advantage. The caution here is to avoid anything which "dates." Articles for the house- hold offer unlimited opportu nities to effect a real saving.

OPEN-WINDOW FOR THE WALLS OF

CURTAINS.

There are three" onistanding rea- sons why summer curtains are, the most important of all seasonable draperies. First, they must create on the mind an air of summer. Second, they should be cool, yet full of pulsing life. Third, they should be delicate, yet strong, and sun- proof.

As in every other textile, good raaterial and proper colour hold the secret of the ideal summer curtain. Madras muslin adapts itself, to floral effects in no unmistakable ternis, Warp and weft of the muslin are among the dzintiest of all textile threads

One point should be remembered about silk net. Much of it is de

signed to match bedspreads. Con-

sequently, when buying, silk net do not forget the matching qualities of your bedspreads

In Whiteaway, Laidlaw's pow, while the sale is in progress, lovely Madras muslins are marked at half price, and fadeless curtain nets, both silk and cotton are amazingly cheap. There are some very hand- some art silk bed spreads to match zome of the curtain materials which are also much reduced during the sale.

To the straight hanging outer curtain nothing looks better than oral eretonne and cretonnes are almost being given away. · A redue- tion from 83.95 to $1.95 a yard is a bargain not to be missed, especial- when the yards in question are so very attractive. :-

A PACKING CASE FROM

JAPAN.

"Quinney" has sent a pucking case from Japan full of all sorts. of delightful toys for young and old-and among the toys are come real treasures. Quinbey, junior, showed them to me yesterday.

First came some charming things made of antimony, amazingly cheap.

HỒNG KONG.

Hong Kong is not a walled city, neither is modern Kowloon, but they both have many many walls, most of them in a rather sad con-. dition. We have given up spole

gising for them years ago, especially as the higher you go, in the scale of riches (to the top of the Peak) the worse are the walls.

Colour

washing is the only possible way of treating them, and alas often before our walls are dry from the latest.' renovation, they are spotted with damp from some enveloping mist.

Lane, Crawford's are coming to the rescue

the heralds of "Salubra" wall paper, which is quaranteed to be waterproof so that it not only withstands the damp, but can be washed if any dirty mark is made on it. A special glue is used to paste it on which is eaid to hold fast in the dimpest atmosphere.

"Salubra 11 paper is being care- fully tested locally before being affered for sale. One of the small dining rooms in Lane, Crawford's restaurant has been lately papered with it and another piece is being tested on the walls of a bath-room on the Peak,

So much for utility. From the point of view of beauty “Salubri"

Papers-which are all the rage at Home just now have, I think, no equals. If you will pay a visit to the mezzanine floor of Lane, Craw fard's they will show you many samples, which will be revelation of the variety and artistic quality of modern papers.

PIONEER NEWS.

I want to draw your attention this week to the branch of the Pioneer Silk Store in the Peninsula Hotel. They have been receiving some very lovely silks there lately, especially some exquisite printed georgettes in the latest patterns,

and those printed crêpe de chines and foulardes which make up 'só well for carly autumn dresses. A new collection too has arrived of striped spur silk suitable for sports or morning dresses and for men's pyjamas.
