Neurasthenia Victim. The coroner, Sir Thomas Brams- don, told the jury that Gidden was aged thirty-eight, and served in the seeing active service in Italy and France. At the end of that time he suffered from nearasthenia, and was sent to an institution at Croy don.
"On April 25," said Sir Thomas, he suffered from a form of in eanity, and it was necessary to place him under restraint. It was decided to remove him from G. to F. ward on June 10, which meant that he had to be taken out into the grounds. He was accompanied by a monitor and two attendants. Another monitor arrived later.

Dr. Paul was asked by the fore- man whether any special method WAB employed in transferring violent patients from and ward to another.
Dr. Paul handed in a statement which, he said, was made by a patient named Grice after he had made a communication to the doc. tor.
When Grice, who gave his full name as Thomas Grice, of Burton- on-Trent, gave evidence, it was stated that he was stone deaf. All questions had to be written on pa per. Grice said:

Fost-Mortem Result..
"As a result of the post mortem examination, conducted by two in- dependent doctors, it is clear that Gidden died from rupture or per- foration of the ulcer.
After Gidden had died it was seen that he had a black eye and other injuries. The case will re- quire very exhaustive investigation. I have delayed the holding of this inquest in order that complete preliminary inquiries could be made by the police.'
Harry Gidden, the father of the dead man, said his son's hoine was at Dupont-road, Raynes Park, S.W., and he was a gardener. He was wounded in France.
Mr. Roome (for the Pensions Ministry): Did your son ever com- plain about an old ulcer 1-No, he was a strong mau.

Alleged "Frog-Marching." Richard Morley, of Florence-street, Middlesbrough, another inmate, said Gidden worked with him in the hospital cobblers' shop. On June 10 he saw three orderlies carrying Gidden into F Ward.
"They were frog marching him," he declared. "I saw Whitehead kick him in the side of the stomach, and then I turned away because ] that sort of thing upsets me. It was a deliberate kick. I heard Gidden
moan ind
with pain."
On the following Friday evening he saw Whitehead at a public house in Cosham, and said to him:
I am sorry, Jim, about that affair. I am going to take my diss charge over it. I saw that kick go in.”
He said, "Don't be silly. Here is a tanner; go and get yourselt a drink. You stand by me.'
Marley said Whitehead had "al- ways treated him quite well since he had been at the hospital.
In the meantime the jury visited the hospital and examined that part of it where the alleged cruelty took, place. There were more than twenty witnesses to be called.
