ADRIFT IN THE AIR. PASSENGER'S TERRIFYING
ORDEAL
An officer, who had never piloted an aeroplane in his life before, had a terrifying experience at Le d Bourget, near Paris, being loft alone in a machine, when the pilot' was thrown out by the violence of à gale.
Lieutenant Sellier invited a bro- ther officer, Lieutenant Ivonnet, to a joy ride to Chartres for luncheon. When returning Sellier discovered that he could not land at Le Bour- get owing to military regulations, so he flew about to pass, the time. Suddenly a storm broke out, and the aeroplane was thrown about in a horrible fashion until Ivonnet saw Sellier thrown out of his seat, and disappear. Ivonnet was too excited to think of using the para- chute on his back and, instead, clasped the controls.
He found that he was able to manage them, and he tried to recall all the things he had seen the pilot do. Then he headed for Le Bour- get. He gradually got the plane to make smaller circles, and then he came down. The 'plase nose- dived for the last few yards, but be scrambled out alive, though the plane was ripped to pieces Sal- ller landed safely in a parachute.
