MAXIMUM SENTENCES IMPOSED.
Lance, Sergeant John Charles Wootton, formerly of the Water Police, was yesterday sentenced to a total of twelve months' im--- prisonment for a series of offences against Chinese boat People. Wootton pleaded guilty to accepting bribes, demanding money by menuces and stealing a sampon. Wootten was described by Mr. Somerset Fitzroy, the Assistant Attorney-General, as a “disgrace to. the Colony and to the country which give him, birth,"
The Magistrate, Mr. T. &. Whyte Smith, said bẹ hoped the boat people in future would take complaints to senior members of the Force and emphasised the need of creating confidence between the Water Police and the boat people.
WORSE THAN THE GODDARD CASE.
At the previous hearing defend- ant was charged on four counts of accepting bribes and one of miscon ducting himself as a public servant. When the case was called yester- day before Mr. Whyte Smith at Kowloon Magistracy Mr. Somerset Fitzroy said that another six charges must be added.
The full list of charges was 15 follows:-
(a.)--For that you Lance Sergeant
John Charles Wootton, being a public servant, unlawfully did accept a bribe of 810 from one Cheng Yau Ting, master of Fishing Boat No. 4104W with a view to influence your ecnduct as such public servant, at Kowloon Bay in the waters of this Colony on the 7th inst.
(b.)-For that you Lance Sergeant John Charles Wootten, being & public servant, unlawfully did accept a bribe of 810 from one. Cheng Shing, master of Fishing Boat No. 5162 with a view to influence your conduct as such public servant at Kowloon Bay in the waters of this Colony on the 7th inst..
(c.)-For that you Lance Sergeant John Charles Wootton, being a public seryant, unlawfully did accept a bribe of ge from one Cho Yat, fisherman, with a view to influence your conduct as such public servant at Shaskiwan Harbour in the waters
ARMS ABOARD THE

An application for a confiscation order was made before Mr. E. W. Hamilton yesterday by Ravenue. Ocer Grinmitt in respect of 111 automatic pistols and 11,000 rounds of ammunition which were unearth- ed in the coal bunkers of the a Haiching.
Revenue Officers boarded the ves- sel on Thunday and after a long search located the contraband. It is thought that the arms and am- munition were smuggled to board by some members of the ship's crew, as it would be a difficult mat- ter otherwise to contrive to get such a large consignment into the bunkers without attracting atten- tion.
