SHANGHAI MARKET. As predicted in our last report, prices for cotton shares moved up considerably and we still do not Lesitate to recommend baring on every reaction. The price of cotton yarn in Shanghai has jumped about ten tacls per bale during the last ten days, and it cannot be denied that with yarn at this price (about Tla. 170 per bale October), all mills. are doing wonderfully well.

Owing to the Sino-Russian dis- pule, however, there is bound to be a certain amount of uneasiness in

The difference of £17 in the quota-Tico "SCALE tions is perhaps difficult to under- stand, as the bighest quotation in Hong Kong in 1925 was 81,300 and to-day's quotation is about 81,230, difference of 870, or roughly £7. The extra £10 is due entirely to exchange, which was almost 2-4 in 1025 and is only a little over 1-11 to-day The price of Hong Kong Bank shares has always been_gov- erned by the local market, and the quotations in Sterling given above

are misleading.

The reference to the Sterling ex- change on Shanghai taels is also misleading to those not familiar with the share market. Banks are dealt with in Hong Kong dollars and in sterling, and it is difficult to understand what direct bearing exchange on the Shanghai tsel..can have on the quotations.

TWO BILLION TONS OF

· DEPOSITS.

Chile occupies eighth place in the world's production of coal, coming after America, Britain, Germany, France, Japan, Belgium and Spain, and ahead of Italy,

That Chilien coal may be used to the exclusion of imported fuel, such While Chile is generally noted

as oil, the Government is encourag- for its nitrate and copper resources, ing the development of new centres Government experts have estimated that there is a total deposit of 2,000,000,000 tons of coal in the southern part of the country. In some sections these deposits extend for miles under the sea, and at one point are believed to stretch as far as the Island of Santa Maris, thirty miles offshore.

Caal production in Chile since 1013 has experienced about the fame aps and downs as in Europe

The Government contemplates ex- tensive port improvements in the south, where the coal is mined, and. in the northern part of the coun- try, which consumes a large por tion in nitrate works and copper mines.
