The Press and Privacy.
Mr. Stanley Baldwin in a Press dinner speech in Lendon the other day is reported as having doubted whether there would be any pri vacy left in England by and by "except the privacy of those who are fortunate enough to belong to- the Press."It is true in some enses the Press' appears to be runn ing down the unwilling victims !! for news with vigour and en- thusiasm more than warranted. It is equally true, however, that the Press does not go after any quarters where there дета and while the Press appears to be intruding into the privacy of other people, " a moment's refection "would con- vince any right minded person that much is not the case. When the
11>
Press attempts to obtain some news from somebody, it does so with a definite object, the most important, which is to furnish the public with the necessary information regard- ing certain events that would be of public interest. It has the least intention of prying into the privacy of anybody because, for one thing, the Press does not ran detective agencies. It would seem that par- ticular people who under given. circumstances try to evade the Press are usually those who have some reasons for learing it as the ingle does the sunlight. As a mat- ter of fact, the privacy of anybody is least interesting for others and the Press does not care, unless some incidents compel it, to make unwilling prohing into such an indispensable part of its work. It is only fair to point out, in this connection, that there are those (rather too many) who are coming after, instead of getting away from, the Press. They are always trying to keep their names in the lime- light by seeking a free advertise- ment. It is not necessary to name what kind of people they are other than mentioning the fact that they are cordially hated by the Press..
