COMEDY OF FALSE

TEETH IN BATH.

AMUSING EVIDENCE IN CLAIM AGAINST HOTEL.

TOY PISTOL DENIAL.

MAN-WOMAN'S " PROBLEM.

TO WEAR LAND-GIRL'S

CLOTHES.

A COMPROMISE.

The Evesham man-woman, Wil- liam Sidney Holten, now known by asher correct name, Sarah Holton,

дож is

convalescent after her serious illness, and will soon again. face the world in which for twenty years she appeared sa a man.

How a man staying at the First Avenue Hotel, Holborn, lose one of bia sets of artificial teeth in the bath there

described WILS Clerkenwell County Court when Heaty Harland, giving an address at Celville-terrace, W., was sued by the First Avenue Hotel, Hol born, for £ 6s, Ed., balance of account, and Harland claimed for £23, the cost of his teeth.

counter-

Harland said that while staying at the hotel last summer be was about to get into a bath which had heen prepared for him by a cham bermaid when he threw his false teeth into the water. This was bis invariable custom.

Judge Rowlands: Before you got into t-As a rule I do that.

Missing Denture. Harland added that when he had finished he drew the plug and after the water had gone he found only There one denture instead of two was no grid and the waste-pipe was so large that he could par his fist

into it.

When he reported the matter the tmanager told him they were not responsible.

The manager afterwards asked bim to find £10,000 to put the sanitation of the hotel in order. He found the money, and the man- ager then said he did not want it.

He had got new dentures since at a cost of £0.

Ho was asked by the manager to leave the hotel in July. He did not regard himself as a humourist, but possibly he was fond of practical jokes. He had never frightened. any of the chambermaids with a toy pistol, and be did not know that any visitors had complained.

Denis! That Knife Was Flourished.

He had not bought an extra- ordinary knife and flourished it in the presence of a chambermaid and sisitors. He had not bought a chain such as chambermaids ear- ried their keys pa, but bought a deg chain which he might have put round himself and walked about with.

The reason be was asked to leave was that be upset the staff by giving them money for tips to attend to him.

Questioned as to other hotels, Harland said that he had been ask. ed to leave the Langham Hotel, and he left the Great Central Hotel without paying all his bill, but he did not know that a judgment had been obtained against him.

Mr. Clement Edwards: Is it not a fabrication that the manager asked you to find him £10,000 for the sanitation of the hotel No, it

is not.

Chambermaid's Evidence. Evidence was given by members of the hotel staff. A ebambermaid said that when she thought Mr. Harland was getting too funny she just let him rattle on and paid no

attention.

Another chambermaid said that she had seen Hurland. go into the bathroom with a dog. She had aiso seen him slide down the ban aisters in the morning.

They denied many of the sta ments made by Harland in his evidence.

The Judge said that he was not at all satisfied with Harland's cvidence or his demeanour in the witness-box. He gave judgment for the Hotel Company for 22 6s. ed., the balance of account, and also for the Hotel Company on the counter- claim.

"CAT" FOR A POST OFFICE ROBBERY...

This time, much to her regret, the must appear as a woman.

The authorities have pointed out to her that it is an offence to mas- querade as a man. Sarah replied that nothing on earth would ever induce her to wear feminine" frill frails."

A compromise has been arranged. The guardians are fitting her out with a land girl's kit, complete with riding breeches and leggings.

Quite Excited,

When I saw her in the private maru of the women's hospital be Was y excited as any debutante over her Court dress, writes a

Laily Express correspondent.

As she smoked she elated to me

her life story. She was born forty years ago, the youngest of a family in which were five boys, and she was brought up practically as boy.

She was only 15 years of age when she married William Holtua, a farm labourer, and after two years of unhappy married life left him. She determined to tramp to Birmingham to seek work, and it was while on this tramp twenty years ago that she conceived the idea of masquerading as a man.

Hauling Job.

She had only eightpence in her pocket, which she had earned by chopping wood, when she met an itinerant tinker with even less. The tinker showed her a dice box, and after winning all his worldly wealth-about fourpence the gam bled the lot against his suit of clothes and won.

They changed clothes, she taking his suit and he dressing in her skirt and tunic.

"It makes me laugh. even now when I think of how funny he look ed." she said.

The day after she arrived in Bie- mingham she took a job a timber hauler, and from that day until her health broke dowA, about fifteen months ago, she was seldom out of work.

No work was too hard or too heavy for her. Labouring, närrying. coal hauling, timber felling-at al

these she has worked.

She met, four years ago; Mabel Hinton, the woman with whom she

was living when her masquerade was discovered. She took pity on her poverty and helped her..
