June and July are usually quiet months so that we do not look for any spectacular movement during the next few weeks. Prices will be mainly controlled by the statistical position, and the American Ques tionaire figures, which will be published this evening, may have some bearing on values

The automoblie production in the United States is reported to be a little lower for May than for April, but the total production for the first five months of the current year shows an increase of nearly 50 per cent, over the same period last year. Stocks: London 31,835 tons (in- crease 90 tons) Liverpool 4,750 tons (increase 108 tons).

We believe in higher prices later in the year, and think that pur- chases at about the current levels will prove profitable.

DETERIORATING QUALITY.

{"D.P." Special Servics.]

Moscow. The quality of goods manufactured in the Soviet Union has steadily deteriorated, according to the findings of a conference of specialists called recently by Cen- trosoyuz," the largest organization of co-operatives.

A large shipment of rice arrived. in Hong Kong a few weeks ago, the consignees being the charterers of the vessel carrying the rice. The documents should have been ob tained from the bank concerned before the rice was discharged, but being also charterers of the steam- er, the consignces took delivery of the rice from their own ship and ignored the bank, through whom, the documents had arrived in Hong Kong.

The incident caused no little seneation when it became known but negotiations between the con- signces and the "bank have now been concluded satisfactorily.
