COMPLETED.

During the past few days, says the North China Daily News' of June 24, rumours of...:

sinister character have been current with reference to the difficulties likely to experienced in carrying through the June share settlentent which falls to-morrow. There is no doubt that in certain quarters. this settlement has been a matter of grea difficulty, and that its con summation will only be possible by means of loans at a very high rate of interest, but the impression was trans- general-following heavy Retions after business hours en Saturday--that everything will be wrranged.

It is difficult to obtain reliable details of the state of affairs. The Shanghai Stock Exchange, accord- ing to members who have been ask ed, state that business. for this settlement among members Eas been i amali. On the other band it is known, or at any rate, assumeil that the opposite is the ease with the Shanghai Sharebrokeri Asso- ciation. Large transacticùla bave been reported by this body, and it is common knowledge that many brokers were caught very badly in greyhounds. It is now mentioned that others have had an equally bad experience in cotton shares.

Settlement to Go Shrough. In the eireurostances, the report was current that those with grey- hound shares were selling in order to cover the losses in cottons, and vice versa. Que broker is reported to have parted with no fewer than 30,000 Ewos after business hours on June 22 in order to secure his position. Banks, of course, do not

lend money on greyhound shures, and the position would seem to be that certain wealthy brokers have borrowed money on their own

securities from the banks in order to lend to those who have been dealing in greyhound and other similar counters,

The report was given cut s being more or less accurate that two men had been able to secure a million and a half ench from banks at from 7 to 8 per cent. in order to Enance others, and that such financing was being carried through at very much higher rates. This total of three million taels, "however, is not supposed to repre amount sent by any means the which is being, required to put through the settlement.

That the settlement will go through seems assured. but it locks very much as if certain elements recently prominent in highly speculative circles may be some- what crippled in the near future.
