BELILIOS MEDALS FOR LIFE SAVING.

"GALLANTRY PRAISED AT POLICE HEADQUARTERS.

1:

SIX CHINESE RECIPIENTS OF HONOURS,

HSIN WAH WRECK_RECALLED.

A pleasant function took place in the compound of Police Headquarters yesterday when six members of the Chinese com- munity, five civilians and a Chinese sub-officer of the Fire Brigade, were awarded the Belilios Medal for their services in saving life. The recipients lined up in front of squads of Police Reservists, Fire Brigade men, and Chinese constables. There were present the Hon. Sir Shou-son Chow, the Hon. Dr. R. H. Kote- wall, est.., LLD.. the Hon. Dr. S. W. To, O. B. E., LL.D., Mr. Li Yau Tsun, C.B.E., and many others representing the Tung Wah Hospital Committee.

*

The Hon. M, T. E. King (acting Captain Superintendent of Police) addressed the gathering, explaining the objects of the meeting. Sir Shou-son Chow then pinned the medals on the breasts of the recipients, shaking hands with each, and later de livered an address. Mr. M. K. La thanked Sir Shou-son Chow on behalf of the Tung Wah Hospital Committee for his presence in spite of a busy day in Council and a prolonged tour with H.E. the Governor over the Yeung Wo Nursing Home. Mr. Lo also thanked Mr. King for organising this very happy fune "tion."

MR. KING'S ADDRESS.

Addressing the gathering, the Hon. Mr. T. H. King said :— Before Sir Shou-son Chow hands these medals to the recipients, I would like to explain briefly the object of this gathering. The late Mr. Belilios extablished a fund in trust, to provide for the grant, of medals, with or without monetary rewards, to persons who perforin- ed acts of conspicuous valour, de- votion or self-denial, whether a life or lives be thereby saved or _Isst, within the Colony of Hong Kong or within the Hong Kong, Canton of Macno watery.

¡ believe the medals were

instituted in 1884, and awards have been made on various oc

• casicns These medals are in no way connected with the Police de partment; it only happens that, 45 Д rule, acts of conspicuous valour, devotion or self-denial, within the terms of the bequest. are brought to notice through re ports furnished by or through the Police. It then becomes a duty and a pleasure to bring such cases to the notice of the Government for recognition by grants of medals under the Belilios Trust. The Official Trustee plays his part by ccasional reminders to this de partment that he is only waiting Lo reward meritorious acts in the Colony, and it is a great pleasure to be able, this afternoon, to draw upon his stocks and funds to re- ward seven members of the Chinese community. Five of these medals go to men who performed praise- worthy deeds in rescuing, people from drowning. One medal goes th sab-Officer Chan Wei Son of the Fire Brigade for devotion to duty at a fire at Laichikok Road.

Suicides in Karbour.

I take this opportunity of calk Ing attention to the large number uf suicides or attempted suicides that take place from the ferries plying between Yaumati and Hong Kong From the 1st March to the present date, no less than 13 cases have occurred. Three of the re- cipients of neda's this afternoon for gallantry in jumping into the harbour to effect rescues of persons who, had jump- ed off ferry boats.

are rewarded

I regret to announce that Cheung Kwong Fook, who rescued sur vivors from the a.s. Hein Wah, died in hospital on May 22 last. He was to have been present this afternoon to receive a medial as a token of appreciation of his con- duct. His son, Cheung Kia Hoi, who was present on his father's junk at the time, and assisted in the rescue work, is here in place of his father to receive the Belilios

Medal,

In conclusion I beg to think you, Sir Shou-son Chow, for com- ing here this afternoon to present the medals, and also you. Gentle men, for honouring the occasion by your interest and attendance.
