TROUBLESOME INDIAN

GUARDS.

DISOBEY ORDERS OF QAPTAIN.

Two Indian Police watchmen of the ss. Hong Peng (British) were summoned before Commander G. F. Hole at the Marine Court. yesterday morning for wilfully disobeying the orders of the master, Captain Charles Cowan, at Singapore on June 13

The complaint against the guards was that they refused to leave a certain part of the ship when ordered by the Master and defendanta Chief Officer. The

were standing at the gangway 'on the first class deck and the Cap- Lain stated that they were free to go to any pars of the ship except the first class deck.

One of the defendants went into the witness box and having denied that he was ordered away from the gangway as stated, commenced to make accusations against the Cap tain and Chief Officer.

Wild Accusations, ** He accused them of conspiring with the ships' compradore to smuggle opium.

Magistrate: Are you in a posi- tion to prove that f

Defendant: Yes, I know the stuff comes from Singapore."

Defendant went on to state that

he stood at the gang way to stop the Captain from taking opium aahore The Captain had already tranferred five other "watchmen who had "disturbed him," in his work of smuggling opium.

Magistrate: You can make a statement, bu can you prove it! It is no use you making a state- ment which you can't provC.

Defendant replied that he had seen them himself, but could not bring say witnesses.

His Worship in convicting both defendants remarked that he had absolutely no doubt in his mind as to exactly what happened.

He ordered them to be signed off before the Deputy Harbour Master and imposed a fine of two days' pay, and two weeks' hard labour.
