The market was rather quieter at the close last night, and it is quite possible that we may see some small reaction after the rise. There is however, altogether, much better feeling in evidence" at the present time, and although it must be admitted that the recovery in prices during the past week is mainly due to short covering, ap. parently shorts alo not see any possibility of a further decline and realize that manufac- turers may, at any moment, come into the market, which would have the effect of driving prices further against them.

After sending her maid to Vic toria Station to clear her register- ed luggage, the defendant herself attended and said that all she bad to declare was five silk dresses for herself and four for her daughter. Other dresses were found, however, and the defendant was told that if there were any garments she had any doubt about she should ex- piain.
Eventually she admitted that she had made untrue statements and declined to fill in the usual form. But she added that she had worn the garments, and that was why
she had not declared them.
Mr. Boyd said it was clear that the defendant was aware of the position long before she declined to sign the declaration. The penalty would be £170.

WOMAN SENATOR ON YOUTH'S PROBLEMS.
Mme. Francoise F. Plaminkova, Senator of the Czecho-Slovakian Republic, and a delegate to the International Council of Women, whose proceedings in London open- ed recently, is one of those rare beings a wean lectual ability, strong personality, in whom intel-
