LIGHTS OUT AGAIN! MARTIAL LAW AT

MORE TROUBLE IN CANTON POWER HOUSE

CITY IN PARTIAL DARKNESS.

FROM OUR CHINESE CORRESPONDENT]

CANTON, June 3. Canton has had quite a reliable electricity service from the Power

Light Company for several months, but now things are worse than ever. Two of the generators have been giving serious trouble and for the past week large portion of the city has been in darkness for long periods between the hours of 6 p.m. and 11 p.

People in the affected areas are complaining bitterly, saying that the unrehability of the lights is giving every opportunity to robbers and outlaws, and the Police endorse that view. Gasoleng lamps are again being used to light the streets in the dark area," and the ex- pense of hiring the lamps and buy ing oil is charged to the Company The police state that this precau tion is absolutely necessary for the préservation of peace and order.

THE PLANT INADEQUATE?

At the end of last month No. 4 generator was out of order, anil the Municipal Bureau of Public Utility, acting on a report by their experts ordered the Company" to have the machine repaired by May 40. This was done, but no sooner was No, 4 again running than No. 3 broke down. The Company was given fl June 7 to get the damage pus right, under penalty of a heavy fine, and A Government engineer has been sent to superintend the work.

The Government has informed the Company that it considers the plant

It is expected that aeroglazes will play an important part in this Jitieult campaign among the hills and wild fastuesses of Kwangsi, and already General Chang Wai Cheung is pushing on with the con- struction of an air base in Wuchow.
