GAINS.

Reuter message sent from A London yesterday morning said that in order to secure a clear working majority in the House of Commons, Labour-with 53 seats gained out of 215 results then known-required 92 more gains out of the remaining 400 seats.

His night's rest was short, for he was busy with his secretaries early in the morning.

Their attitude suggested that it would be advisable to wait for the complete list of returns, as the fight is not yet won or lost.

LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE DEPRESSED BY

ELECTION RESULTS.

Election returns to hand up to the time of going to Press last night showed that Labour" had made large-and not altogether unexpected-gains. They had won, to be exact, 108 seats, and the Conservative party had lost 113.

The much-talked-of Liberal "rövival is not yet very much in evidence, although the Party is already represented a little more strongly than in the last Parliament.

Perhaps the most striking of the returns were those from Portsmouth and Chatham, both of which went over to Labour. York, another Tory stronghold, also fell before the onslaught.

The "family touch" is much in evidence. Mr. Arthur Henderson has two sons to Basist him in the House; Mr. Ramsay MacDonald's son has also been returned; and Mr. Lloyd Georgs has probably derived one great personal satisfaction out the 1929 Election-the return of his daughter, Miss Megan.

The three Party leaders were all returned, Mr. MacDonald with the astounding majority

of, 28,794.

Although there are still about 100 returns to come, it seems reasonably safe to forecast Opposition" majority.

'WINNIE' RE- ELECTED.

LLOYD GEORGE AND RAM- SAY MACDONALD SAFE.

Mr. Winston Churchill succcaS- fully contested the Epping seat in three-cornered contest, with a majority of 4,967.

Mr. Ramsay MacDonald secured the astounding majority of 29,794 in a successful four-cornered bout at Seaham.

The Rt. Hon. D. Lloyd George also secured election at a three- Carnaroon, fight at cornered though his majority fell by 3,500, and Sir Mitchell Thomson; the Rt. Hon. A. M. Samuel; Lord Wolmer; Rt. Hon. J. H. Thomas; Major Tryob, Sir John Gilmour; Col. Ashley and Mr. Malcolm Mac- Donald (son of the Labour leader) were also successful.

Mr. Arthur Henderson's two sons gained Erfield and Cardiff (S.). respectively and Lady Cynthia Mosley (Lab,) was elected for Stoke, defeating Col. John Ward, the "Navvice M.P." and a former

Labour Member, who received the support of the Conservatives at the contest.

STOCK EXCHANGE GLOOM.

THROUGH ELECTION RESULTS- AND THE KING'S ILLNESS.

According to a Reuter message, the London Stock Exchange is taking a gloomy view of the Elec- tion results, while the King'a indis position is causing considerable hesitation in the market.

British securities generally are weaker, and the general tone of the market is inclined to be reaction- ary. No selling pressure is notice- able, however.

The Headquarters of the Indepen. dent Labour Party deny the views expressed by many of the Home AN EXPLOSION IN-KABUL, newspapers yesterday morning that the polls up to the moment could not be regarded as indicative of the final issue. It is declared that the development of the Labour vote has not been confined solely, to indas. trial constituencies.

As instances of this fact, the cases of Liverpool and Birmingham, which have joined the movement, despite the fact they were former ly Conservative strongholds, is cited.

"Despite our lack of funds," Headquarters declared, "we expect a much larger vote from the county rural constituencies."

PREMIER RE-ELECTED. Mr. Baldwin retains his sent, as does Mr. Walter, Guinness.

Two prominent Labour women, Miss Susan Lawrence and Misa Margaret Bondfield, have been re elected.
