THE RONALD ROSS
FUND.
MALAYA'S SHARE IN THE EFFORT.
A fand has been opened in Singapore by the Straits Timed in connection with the appeal of Sir James Barr, the famous English physician, to raise a fund of. £50,000-as-a-national testimonial to Sir Ronald Ross, the discoverer of the malarial type of mosquito and the method by which a certain type of malaria is transmitted.
an'
Malaya has still a very long way to go, however, before its contribu tion can be regarded as adequate expression of its debt to Sir Ronald Ross. Although it has been the enterprise of local medical men that has made Malaya an example to the tropical world in the field of malaria contral, it was the discoveries made some thirty years ago by Sir Ronald Ross that made progress of any kind possible.
No country owes more to Sir Ronald Ross than Malaya. At the time when his epoch-making dis coveries were made, some thirty years ago, the ideas held as to the origin of malaria were strange and wonderful. When Sir Ronald Ross visited Malaya in 1926, at the in- vitation of the Hon. Dr. A. L. Hoops, who was then president of the Malayn branch of the British Malcolm Watson, he was amazed

Con- siderable quantities of native flour also being imported from Shanghai. In consequence, the market is overstocked, and demand is short on .account of military activities, only very limited quan- tities of four being exported to country districts. Demand for na tive flour is keezer than that for foreign flour, due to cheaper prices, At present. quotations for imported four are so low that the market is rather slack.
The demand for cotton yarn is unusually dull, as consumption by the country districts is small and stocks are accumulating. During
the last ten days several thousand bales of both Chinese and foreign yarns have been imported, making the market still more inactive. A further decline in prices is recorded.
•
Much success has been achieved by manufacturers of alectric supplies, especially of torches, in the city during the last few years. Factories manufacturing torches have increas ed to about a dozen. Hundreds of workers are engaged in each of the larger factories, while the smaller ones each have about 100 employees. The products of these factories are popular, as they are said to be in no way inferior to torches from abroad, while the price is cheaper. The output of the factories ia inadequate to meet the demand in country district and from Malaya merchants Chinese made cells are also in strong demand, and there are over fifty small factories en- gaged in this business, all making good profits.
*
Prices of rice have risen by about 30 per cent. in Waichow, a well- known rice-preducing district, due
the prolonged drought and to the military situation in the East River district, whence no rice is being imported. The current price is about one dollar for seven catties, this price being higher than in the Canton market.
