OPERA COMPANY'S SUCCESS.

A SPLENDID SOPRANO.

Several things impressed me very favourably in connection with the performance at the Star Theatre by Carpi's Italian Grand Opera Cox- pany of Verdi's "Rigoletto."

Mlle. E. Ersanili, for instance, has a wonderful soprano voice of While it would be an exaggeration extreme compass and rich tone. to say that she could be regarded entirely as a prima donna, of the Grat order, yet she possesses a voice of a quality rarely met with out- side Europe.

As Gilda, she also displayed power of acting quite on a par with her lovely voice.

Maddalena (Mlle. G. Benedetti) also sang very well indeed. A rich contralto, she made a strong appet to her audience nad one could easily forgive whes, appealed to the writer as a too-frequent use of hard palate. Nevertheless, I thought she was quite refreshing, and a worthy member of a delightful quartette.

A Pleasing Jester.

The prisoners were Ho San, Chung San, Wong Hoi (an amah) and Cheung Fat To, who were all charged with robbery; and the second prisoner on an additional count of receiving a stolen pair of plari ear-rings. Ho San admitted the erime at the first hearing and was not in dock, but he was called as a witness for the defence by Mr. Hin Shing Lo, who defended the fourth prisoner, Cheung Fat To.

According to the cases as outlined by Mr. Somerset Fitzroy (Assistant Attorney-General), five men enter- ed the house on January 31 and stole a considerable amount of pro
