HALL

The little plas "Pilgrim's Pro- gress," given last week by the meni bers of the Young People's Service of St. Andrew's, Kowloon, at the Church Hall, under the guidance of Mrs. J. H. Hunt. was repeated yesterday to a large audience.

Mrs. Hunt his done narvels, and chewn great skill in the way in which she has taken the essential scenes out of Bunyan's allegory and made them into a simple story which can be acted and understood by children. The scenery which was the work of Mr. Hunt was simple and made an admirable background.

LONDON, April 4. The committee organised to take p the British share of the work in the World Engineering Congress in Tokyo was very much gratified by the generous response to the ap: real of December 22. PUNISHMENT IN AFGHANIS

TAN.

BLOWN FROM MOUTH OF CANNON,

Afghanistan is renowned history for the severity of its punishment. One of these harsh pundshments was the blowing' of a ran from a cannon mouth-by no means uncommon in recent years.

One Indian traveller (Mr. Borab Katrak, of Karachi), who made a motor tour of Afghanistan just be- fore the recent revolution, relates how he saw this sentence carried out the day of his arrival at Kandahar.

ол

Looted garavans. He noticed groups of people run- ning towards the open maidan (plain), and learnt that thres men who had been caught looting motor caravans between Chaman and Kan-- dabar were to be blown, from the. cannon's mouth. One of them, he said, was cut clean in half, while the other was shattered.

Before the Indian spectator had recovered a small Afghan boy of about 10 picked up one of the pieces, examined it curiosity, and took it away, 30 Dele

An old resident of Kandahar told the motorist that some years ago an arm of one culprit was wrenched off, and struck a spectator on the forehead with such violence that th manded from the blow,

Yet these people watched the per formance with faces less expressive and outwardly less moved than an English football crowd.
