MAN LIBELLED BY HIS

MOTHER.

£1,000 DAMAGES FOR

"FIENDISH" LETTERS.

WEALTHY WOMAN.

A libel action which was charne- torised as one of the strangest that had ever come before the courts

was heard at Manchester Assizes when Mr. Cyril Horsley Jones, aged thirty-five, of Prestwich, was awarded "£1,000 damages and costs against, his mother, Mrs. Clara Jones, of Prestwich.

WAS

Mr. J. C. Jackson, K.C., for Mr. Jones, said that Mrs. Jones' action "really fiendish." The libels were contained in two letters, and were of the most wicked nature They were apt to ruin Mr. Jones' career and his life.

Mrs. Jones, who was a woman of strong personality, had built up a fortune, and now had an income of between £8,000 and £7,000 a year. She was vindictive when she did not have her own way, Mrs. Jones owned nearly all the shares in the Eaton Hill Dye and Printing Com pany. at Radcliffe.

Family Honour.

Mr. Jones, the son, was manager of the mill at Radcliffe until 1926, and had a good future. He thought it his duty in 1926 to interfere in something that affected the family honour, and from that time the mother, who did not care for his interference, started the most male volent course of persecution against

him

She had him dismissed from the mill. She also started an action for slander, but when it was point- ed out that he would have to go into the court to plead the truth of the statement made she withdrew the action. "Then,"

added Mr. Jackson, "Mrs. Jones started a course of anonymous letters, sending them to such quarters as she thought would do the most harm.'

"Assaulting a Woman."

Mr. Jackson added that letters were sent to Mr. Jones' father-in- law, and in one Mrs. Jones accused her son of assaulting a young, wo- man in a railway train, and stated that he paid £50 to settle the mat- ter.

Mr. Jackson pointed out that the mother had written or dictated the letters. There was no attempt at all to justify the words and no ens suggested that they were true.

Mr. J. Lustgarten, defending, after examining Mr. Jones," said that he did not propose to call any evidence.

Mr. Jackson described the mother's action as "diabolical," and asked for vindictive damages. Mr. Lustgarten said that Mrs. Jonce had not auggested that what was in those letters no.far as her gon was concerned was true.
