A NEW BRITISH ARRIVAL

5.S. RIO DORADO.

·Among vessels arriving in Hong Kong yesterday was the as.. Rio Dorado (British) which was making her first visit to the port. She is owned by the Thompson Steamship Co., Ltd. for whom Mesars. Dodwell & Co. are the local agents. The vessel arrived from. Cardiff with a cargo of iron and steel goods for Hong Kong and 8.000 tons of general merchandise for through ports.

She was built in 1994 for the Blyth Steamship Building Com pany and D.D. Ltd., of Blyth with anett. tonnage of 2,766 tons, and gross 4,507 tous. Her engines which develop 444 N.H.P. were installed by the North East Marine En- gineering Company of Newcastle The ship's dimensions are: Length 300 ft, Beam $5.6 ft., and Depth 25.3 (t.

Captain P. Barraclough is in 3,430 command. Her sister ship the Rio Diamante, operated by the same Shipping Company, arrived here on her first visit early in the month.

Twenty-four Boatpeople Fined. Twenty-four mistresses of sam- pans, and boatmen were fined $10 each with the alternative of 10 days' hard labour by Commander G. F. Hole at the Marine. Court yesterday morning for making fast to the s.s Schlesien (German) whilst under- way in the Central Fairway Lance-Sergeant Oliver prosecuted and all defendants pleaded guilty.

Birth During the Voyage. The master of the as. Hong Hwa (British) which arrived from Rangoon and Singapore reports a birth during the voyage five days dur-after leaving Singapore.

The RMS. Empress of Asia ar. rived at Kobe yesterday at 7.30 a.m. and left at 3 p.m. She is due at Yokohama at. 9 p.m. today and leaves at 3.p.m. to-morrow.

The RMS. Empress of France arrived at Shangha yesterday at 12.30 p.m. and leaves Shanghai to day at 8.30 am. She is due at Hong Kong on Friday morning and leaves for Manila at 5 p.m. the same day.

A notice in the harbour office states that the whole department will be closed on Friday, March 29. On Saturday, March 30, and Monday, April 1, the Entry and Clearance office will be open from 10a.m. to 12 noon and the Junk Office will be open from 11 am.
