PRISONER DISCHARGED.
JUDGMENT ENTERED FOR, PLAINTIFFS.
Judgment for the plaintiffs with costs was given at the Summary
against Madame Chiffon, of Hong Kong Hotel Building, for $1,000. The plaintifs were represented by Mr. H. C. Macnamara (ol·Mesars, Deacons), while the defendant was neither present nor represented in Court.
Modams Amelita Galli Curel, NO OFFENCE AGAINST LOCAL Court yesterday in a claim brought the famous singer about whom so many widely differing opinions have been in the air during the last weeks before her long..promised recital, sang to a crowded house in the Queen's Theatre last night, to the echoed accompaniment of thun- derous applause.
To bring the action within sum- mary jurisdiction, a sum of $92.00 was waived. The plaintiffs were. Messrs. L. Rondon & Co., of Inter- sauim Building, 9, Avenue Edouard VII. Shanghai.
The sum was the equivalent of 13,328.80 francs, at, exchange $1 equals francs "1255 on August 13,
After a whole day's proceedings yesterday before the Full Court, comprising the Chief Justice (Sir Henry Gollan) and the Puisne Judge (Mr. Justice Wood), in the Haiphong extradition case, their Lordships discharged the prisoner.
The case concerned Chan Hong Chuen, a Haiphong Chinese, who is wanted by the French authorities of Indo-China For'kn alleged offence against the bankruptcy laws, and the Central Magistrate who heard The balance was due under three the ease held that a primă faciebills of exchange drawn by plain- tiffs on defendant in respect of sweetness of case had been made out against goods sold and delivered. which the prisoner and committed him to bills had been dishonoured by de- Prison for 15 days pending the fendant by non-payment.
Memories of a not too happy tour in England, perhaps, accounted for her evident pervousness in the open- ing numbers of a recital in an Eng lish Colony. But as Galli Curci. saw how the audience liked her she began to show her appreciation of them by singing with considerably more freedom and
tone.
Galli Curci is known and loved all the world over for her mar- vellous gramophone records. Like Caruso, she is the happy possessor of a voice that records perfectly. and every one who has heard her sing vid the gramophone and prais ed God that so lovely a voice was given to the world, has longed to hear her on the concert platform. All the world over there have been those who were disappointed, when those lovely nightingale notes seemed to have lost something of their case and clarity, and when, still worse, the diva's nervous temperament be trayed her into occasionally singing too sharp and occasionally too fat during a difficult passage, of the exceedingly difficult music which she has made her own.
Perhaps there were those among the audience at the Queen's yes terday who felt this disappoint ment. It seems inevitable that there should have been, but the feeling of the audience as a whole was delight in Galli Curci's great gift. She could not sing enough to please them, and even the six encores 80 graciously accorded at the end of The programme left them asking for more. Her voice has a unique character which more than atopes for the faults due to her tempera ment. She attempts the most dif- ficult sequences of high bird-like notes, rising and falling abruptly with no apparent effort, and every thing she sings is coloured with a note of pathos and extraordinary
sweetness.
