Begitchev's death from scurvy while on a hunting expedition was reported in the Press in the apring" of 1927. One of his comrades on that expedition, the hunter Natal- chenko, has now been found guilty of murder. It has been established that he killed Begitchev in order to take possession of his widow, with' whom he was in love, and through Eer also. of a considerable amount of money.

It was not clear in the proceed. inga whether the explorer's widow had any share in planning the mur- der, although it was proved that she had been carrying on a love affair with Natalchenko before her husband's death.

Suspicions Argused. Begitcher in 1920 headed an ex- pedition, undertaken at the request. of the Norwegian Government, in search of two members of the crew of Amundsen's ship "Maud." As a reward for his efforts he was pre. sented with a large sum of money by the Norwegian Government the same money which later came into the hands of his murderer,

In the autumn of 1926 Begitchev organized a hunting party to the northernmost parts of Siberia. He left his home, the fur trading station of Dudinka on the river Yenesey, accompanied by Natal chenko, whom he considered among his closest friends, and other Arctic hunters. In the following spring the expedition returned-but with out its leader.

Natalchenko told an apparently credible story of how Begitehev had been taken ill with scurvy, how m heroically he had behaved to the end, and how, several days later, on May 22, 1997, he had died. Natalchenko showed photographs of the corpse and of the grave near the Piossina river. Other members of the group supported his story, and for a while no one doubted its truth.

Suspicions were first aroused when Natalchenko and the widow of Begitcher both. disappeared from. Dudinka. They showed up in Kras

in high style upoz Begitchev' 23rd March, 1929, will be subject to money. Inquiries by the police soon disclosed the whole story.

Natalchenko, it appeared, had iured Begitchey from his comrades, provoked a fight and knocked him Acaseless. In this condition he brought him back to camp, where he died two days later without having regained consciousness, Natalchenko then returned tc Dudinka to console the widow, aho was not unwilling to receive his amurous attentions.
