HONG KONG ANNUAL RACE MEETING.
DERBY DAY
PRESIDENT HALL WINS LOCAL CLASSIC.
[BY EARLY BIRD.].
Mr. Ho Kom Tong's griffin President Hall simply ran away with the Hong Kong Derby, after being cleverly ridden by Mr. Encarnaca in a waiting race which would have afforded him a win at any part of the journey.
President Hall has shown remarkable ability ever since he was sent out for his first trial run, and from first to last he has stood firm in the eyes of those who are competent to judge a well bred contender.
.:
་་
Mr. Ho Kom" Tong's judgment in inviting Mr. Encarnação to' come down from Shanghai to ride his pony leads one to "believe" that is also an excellent judge of a good horseman, as Mr. En caraacao rode an extraordinarily good race from flag fall to win- ning post
ין
་
Mr. Ho Kom Tong was the recipient of unstinted applause as ho led his pony in after the race and afterwards received the con- gratulations of many admirers of his keen and enthusiastic sports- manship.."
Elliot Bay, Mr. Dunbar's nomination for the Champion Sweepstakes, was not started to day in view of his engagement to-day. This event should produce a sensational race and may possibly result in another record being broken.
Boxing Eve added to his reputation by registering three-fifths of a second better time over the same distance which was covei- ed when he was beaten by Coos Bay on the first day of the meet- ing. However, owing to the fact that Boxing Eve was carrying. under weight for inches the performance will not be considered in the light of an official record
·HANDICAP EVENTS.
Today's races will include two handicap events for A" and *B Class entrants and a Consolation Stakes for "panies who have started at least twice and have not won. Either of these events may help the unlucky owners of inferior class ponies to pull off a win before the close of the meeting."
It is very discouraging to have to keep running ponies in races where they have not an earthly chance of gain- ing a place, let alone a win, and trust for the sake of those unfortunate owners who cannot afford to buy expensive griffins that samething will be done by the Compilation Committee of the Eong Kong Jockey Club to provide a handicap event in each day's programme. This will allow the small owner to start his ponies in a race where he has a sporting chance of winning.
THE RACING.
Five starters faced the flag in the curtain miser, which provided win for Ho Sai Man, the son of Mr. Ho Kom Tong. The winner showed very good judgment during the race and kept his mount well in hand until he saw his field begin to come back to him, when be cleverly gave his pony his head and almost left the field standing, to finish many lengths in front of Desert Wind who was favourite. Botelho, who was riding The Haugh, succeeded in gaining an appreciable lead on account of a firing start and he was quite pro minent till passed by the winner before entering the straight Mount Elburg was very disinclined to allow his owner rider to mount be fore the race. He subsequently ran third.
Exchange Plata.
Only Eye ponics laced the starter in this event, which provided our 1098 crack with an easy victory over Young Pretender, who was a shade the better favourite. Boxing Eve was quickly taken to the front where he remained for the full course. He was never headed and eventually won by three lengths from Young Pretender who put up the determined challenge" in straight but was beaten.

Football shed and retained the lead, only to lose it again as Akizifaxi pot in his run as they came down the bend to enter the straight. The Sun, closely followed by O'Moon, entered the straight with Ptomigan gaining ground on the outside. Skintaxi faded away at the distance post and allowed The Sun to win by halt length from Sunshine, who beat the Ptarmigan by a hand..
* Black Bock Stakes. Nino panips faced the starter, who let them go in a bunch. Haim ovitch bad command at the stands with Reidy on Eclipse Eve a length in rear and Backhouse on Lightning last.
Imperial Hall moved up coming down the incline, and Delaware Bay was pushed forward. Entering the straight King's Counsel was on terms and at the distance post was in charge. He ran on to win by ane length from Imperial Hall with one length separating Delaware Bay. who finished third.
The Gymkhana Stakes. Pickle upset the pot in a field of twelve, and paid his supporters $39 for a win. Misty Eve, the beavily backed favourite,
beaten by his big impost of 183 lbs. One Third who was second favourite could only manage to collect third money by beating a "C" Class con- tender by a few lengths.
The time for the race was good, 2.03.4-5, considering the winner was not fancied.
The Peking Plate.
23 starters were out in this event which provided the second win in succession to Mr. A. C. Clack, who rode Jamaica to pay his backers
$33.50 for a win. The winner was | well placed all through the journey sad cams away with a beautiful rush on entering the straight. Piecy tried to wear down the leader but without any result, as he stayed on to win by 14 lengths, two lengths dividing the second pouy from Bronze Idol who was third.
