CHARGE REDUCED TO MANSLAUGHTER. drunk
The Royal Arrow trial opened yesterday at the Supreme Court, when a young man, Louis Pedersen, was charged before Mr. Justice J. B. Wood, with the murder of one of his shipmates, John Zetter. berg, on board that ship while she was lying at the Standard Oil Co.'s Wharf at Laichikok on January 19th, this year. The story, as told in Court, was that since the ship left San Pedro, no member of the crew had had any alcoholic drink. It was a "dry ship" and the journey to Hong Kong took 29 days. Immediately on ärrival, it appeared, at least three members of the crew lost no time in laying in a stock of beer and whisky. Unfortunately for them, they bought their drinks from sampan, and it is alleged ther the whisky, although in a Black and White" bottle, was of local. brew.
After soaking themselves with whisky and beer, necording" to the Crown, Zetterberg and Pedersen bad & discussion about boxing, this led to soms sparring, friendly at first, and followed by heavy blows The prosecution contended that in the acufe, Pedersen seized a full bottle of beer and struck Zetterberg on the nape of the neck, killing him instantaneously,
The accused, Federsen, a smartly dressed young man, was defended by Mr. H. G. Sheldon, instructed by Mr. O. E. C. Marton. The case for the prosecution was conducted by

The problem is further comple ated by the fact that the neighbour- ing provinces of Kwangsi, Yunnan and weichow are hig producers of opium. The provincial govern ments are all anxious to stop the culture and use of the drug, but the practical dificulties are very great. Kwangtung has, however, order ed the suppression of all

Manslaughter and Murder Delaed,
Before outlining the facts of the case, Mr. Fitzroy explained the law as to murder and manslaughter. The former was the killing of a man by a person of sound memory and discretion, with malice aforethought. Such malice could either be express ed or implied. Manslaughter was the unlawful and felonious killing of another person without malice expressed or implied.
Counsel said that the Royal Arrow arrived at Hong Kong January 18th, this year, and tied up alongside the Standard Oil Com pany's wharf at Laichikok. The
