The formal dinner may include in its menu delicate asparagus tips broccoli or cauliflower, tiny beets." green string beans of the minuscule and expensive variety, and arti- chokes, but when has the cabbage been allowed to bo associated in people's minds with glass center- pieces and cut flowers! The cabbage should be soft, but must not fall apart, and should have a glossy, bluish red colour. Garnish with glazed cheat- auta and sausage, too, if you like.

Nevertheless, cabbage has its place. With game, for example, red cabbage with chestnuts is an accepted accompaniment,

I shall give the recipe, and follow with several others for preparing cabbage in ways that should lift it out of the "home dinner" class.

Remove the outer leaves, the veins and the stalk, from a head of red cabbage, divide the cabbage in half, and shred fine. Place the cab bage in a colander over a pan, and pour boiling water over the cab- bage, letting it stand over the pan" for ten or fifteen minutes. Chop a large onion, and stew in some bot fat with two teaspoons of sugar until it is a gold colour. Add the cabbage, a peeled and cored apple cut in quarters, salt, black pepper, half a cup of vinegar and water mixed; and several cloves stuck in 3 piece of onion. Stew until the cabbage in soft, adding beef broth occasionally, When it is nearly done, dust some flour over the cab-

TWO SMART SCHOOL FROCKS.

It combines printed and plain wool jersey and it alto, smart made of wool crepe in navy blue with bright red contrast and suede belt.

BEAUTY.

LEARN TO BE SHOEWISE,

up.

Rat she didn't look her best.

There were tiny lines around her month and nose which no amount of powder could conceal and she seemed listless and ill at ease. To look at her you would wonder if perhaps she

were suffering from som grant sorrow, some tragic loss. Har troubles were just as real but much less romantic and interesting her feet hurt!

Why DO women try to squeeze their feet into shoes two sizes too smal for them! They can't think that it looks well to have their feet bulging over the sides of the shoes, to hobble along miserably, and to look haggard and drawn and yet they go on doing it.

Even if you have size ten feet they will look better and you will be generally more attractive if you buy size ten shoes rather than size six or seven. Your feet are com fortable, it naturally into the shoes, and you walk with ease and possibly grace. At any rate, your mind isn't constantly on your feet and you are free to enjoy yourself.

Buying very cheap shoes is the poorest economy I know of. You will eventually spend a great deal of money on a foot specialist as well as many painful and unhappy hours, if you don't buy well-fitting shoes that support the feet properly.
