Business during the past fortnight has been interrupted by the Christ.&O. B mas and New Year holidays, and very little interest has been taken in the market.

We hear from a

Liverpool man, who has just returned from the United States, that farniers seem to have sold all their crop, and that practically no cotton is now in first hands. This surmise is probably eorrect, bearing in mind the interest which has to be paid for call money in Wall Street. It is obvious that bankers will have been pressing for the liquidation of loans to farmers with a view to employing the funds to better advantage in the North.

On this side, too, trade is some- what more promising. principally on account of the better prospect of business with China, and spinnere appear to be in a better situation than at this time last year.

It is interesting to note that, in view of the high cost of living, the cost of production in Japan is very much the same as in Lancashire in spite of the fact that Japanese mills are working 20 hours per day. After the 1st July, they will be permitted to work only 17 hours per day. This may mean a lessening of the intense competition from Japan which has confronted Lancashire spinners for so long.

After the New Year has opened with its hopes of better trade, it frequently happens that there is a sight reaction of feeling, and, consequently; a slight reaction in prices is very often witnessed.
