THE VOGUE FOR BLACK AND WHITE.

THE WOMAN IN THE THIRTIES.

SOME MAGPIE FROCKS FROM PAMELA.

The early spring has brought a decided vogue for black and white. There is perhaps. nothing more universally becoming than a magpic ensemble, be it for afternoon, even- ing, for the morning promenade to which French women pay so much

Black and white is, of course, always in vogue, but it has de- finitely been adopted as the chic colour scheme for the early spring of 1929, and Pamela bas just re- Black is of course, well under-ceived some very smart and sttrae stood to be a good standby and tive magpie dresses for afternoon charming on young and old alike. and evening wear. but the not-quite-se young woman

Another evening gown is made of black satin, the white being intro- duced as a lining to the skirt and the large bow with sash ends on the left hip. The skirt is similar in cut to that last described. Em broidery in silver and diamente heads on the right shoulder and hip, completes a gown which would be very smart indeed on a woman of some years and distinction.

The chief interest is in the clever ar rangement at the hips, where ap pled fat tucks are arranged in a most attractive" sunhurst affect in front, leading up to a paste buckle.

For example, an afternoon dress is better served by an ensemble in heavy black silk marocaine re which introduces white. The reason lieved with white satin. The black is obvious. Both the very young is used for a coat dress, opening and the old have a decided charm over a white satin slip. An interesting note is the finishing of the white slip which is cut to a Y at the bottom and bordered with black to get a straight hem line.. The skirt of the ship thus repeats the line exposed by the coat above the belt.

Unrelieved black on the not quite so young woman serves to emphasise just what she would seek to hide, but when combined with white it gives her distinction and emphasises the particular charm of a woman who tas learnt the meaning of life and knows how to face existance with dignity and confidence.

A VISIT AU PÉTIT LOUVRE.

I often wonder what is the peculiar fascination of exquisite clothes. Everyone, man and woman, old and young, foolish and wise, feels it; and, though perhaps we may envy her, somewhat, everyone likes to see a really well dressed woman. Even in the Bible the "raiment of needle work" of the King's daughter is spoken of a being one of the glorice of the realm.

1

Another curious fact is that no one is much more genuinely enthus iastic about clothes than those whose business it is to sell them, even if they themselves cannot afford to wear the model gowns which they show to others. They say that people who work in sweet shops or fac. taries very soon loose all taste for candy, but the same certainly can- not be said of vendeuses or maade. quins in a dress establishment.

The lace in panels of about 4 inches wide, is inset round bodies and skirt in wide scallops, those on the bodice curving up just in "front and at the back of the shoulders and three of the skirt failowing the same line. A falling spray of pink flowers is set just in froat of the left shoulder.
