CANTON, January 17th.

M. Avenol, Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Nations, arrived in Casten from Hong Kong early this morning for a short official visit before proceeding to Nanking. He was met by Dr. Chao Hsin Chu. Commissioner for Foreign Affairs, and was taken to the Victoria Hotel, Shameen. Later he paid sa oficial call on Dr. Chu who knew M. Avenol very well in Genevs when the former was China's representative at the League of Nations:

M. Avenol was also guest of honour at the Government House at the New Year banquet given by Marshal Li Tani Hain and General Chen Ming Shu. There were 150 distinguished guests of nearly every nationality, including Admiral Stotz of the French Navy, H.E. Henrik de Kaufmans, the Danish Minister to China, and a score or more of others.
