ANNOUNCEMENT,

8500 notes of a new design wil. shortly be issued by the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation thus completing that Institution's | intention of replacing their entire circulation of Notes in this Colony.. The new notes, which are slightly shorter than the old, are of a light purple shade with the centre of the front and a border«an the back in polychrome.

In conformity with the previous notes of this issue a prominent feature is the medallion carrying a water-marked head of Britannia and the figures300." This is balanced by a seated female figure whilst the centre is taken up by the Bank's crest and the words Five Hundred Dollars. The figures "300" becupy each corner, three of them Chinese équivalent having the adjacent.

The reverse has a view of the I main entrance of the Book as a centre piece surmounted by a herald and flanked by two oblong panels, one having the denomination * 500 dollars in it and the other the hend of Britannia previously men- tioned.

A cable from Shanghai on the 16th instant stated that the price for No. 3 yarns had dropped taels per hale, and others had dropped 1 tacl per bale: Wednes day's market at Canton was also | two members of the Bank staf. very dull and quotations fell by 83 a bale.

The serial number will be seen in six places-twa on the Ence and four on the reverse.

MODERATE OPTIMISM FOR

Mesers. Carroll Bros have been advised that rubber has remained steady heavy shipments from Malaya, amounting to 66.763 tong in December, having failed to produce any noticeable effect on the market. Of this amount 43,538 tous are des- tined, for the United Statea.

It is believed, however, in London that consumers, reserve stocks will need replenishing in the near future; which process would naturally tend to mitigate the gradual increase of stocks referred to above.

From New York comes the state- ment that trade authorities there consider the outlook for the current year to be the best for many years past

Temporary setbacks must be ex- pected but there is

every excuse for moderate optimism in respect of the second half of the year at any rate..

It would appear that too many are waiting for a fail in prices before purchasing for forward delivery to permit of any such deeline being long maintained.
