TROUBLE THREATENED AT KUALA LUMPUR.

Kuala Lumpur, January 8th Only the prompt arrival on the scene of.a large contingent of native and European police including most of the available reserves in the proximity of the Fire Station and the realisation of the potentialities of a powerful hose ready for action prevented a serious diéturbance of the peace last evening about nine which is now opened on the Malaces bo'olock opposite the Manila show

The audience in the Capitol Theatre at the time of the raid had no idea of what was going on. One person, sitting just inside the door had no suspicion that anything un toward had occurred. Last night the firm was shown as usual, an arrangement having been come to between the Capitol Theatre and the Carlton for one to show the film slightly before the other and, as only part of the first reel had been destroyed, to send the missing reel to the Capitol in time for it to be shown as part of the whole pie

ture.

The Seizure Of The Film.

According to officials of the Capitol Theatre the raid took place shortly after 5.30 p.m. the first evening performance. About six Italian marines from the ship Libya, so the management state, entered the lobby of the theatre and one man bought three tickets. Going upstairs the men entered the bar, from which is the door entering the projection room. Getting hold of a boy who sold chocolates in the auditorium, they demanded access to the projecting room, and the boy showed them the entrance,

According to the management, some attempt to interfere with the screening of the picture had been Pexpected, and an order had been issued to the men in the projecting room to keep the door locked. They opened it, however, in answer to

A Public Bonare," Great jubilation was displayed by the marines and sailors over the success of their raid, and there were to the celluloid at the foot of the loud cheers while a light was set Chapoo Road Bridge opposite the theatre. Police arrived too late to save the film, and by the time they were on the scene in force, the marines and sailors had dispersed in the direction of Chapoo Road.

Precautions were taken to prevent a similar coup at the Carlton Theatre where the film was being shown at the same time. A strong police cordon was placed round the theatre. The evening performance passed off without incident. It is understood, however, that some parts of the film may be censored in order to allay irritation among Italians here.

It appears that about this time a large crowd of Chinese gathered opposite, the entrance of the show and prevented, sometimes farcibly, Chinese and even other nationalities from entering the show, presumably because it was understood the show, which is American owned, had been managed by a Japanese. Pah were heard and those who dis After the interval shouts of Pah

The Police immediately arrived in force and dispersd the crowed and guarded the vicinity, of the show until nearly eloven o'clock.

Four persons were injured and were removed to hospital, The dis turbance is presumed to have been caused by Communist agents and secret societies.-Straits Timer, a

sacrifice of a young girl to save ter mother. A letter to the Shanghai Press warned the Italian community here not to see the picture. It was stated that the picture was banned by the Italian Government. The story of the picture is that the heroine, Angela, frantic in her de- sire to obtain some money to pur chas medicine for her sick mother, offers herself on the streets of Narles without success. At last she endeavours to steal some change given to the customer of a spag- hetti stand and is arrested by Rio, a policeman who has been observing her actions.

The whole coup at the Capitol appears to have been carefully ar ranged beforehand. The men out- side the theatre behaved with per fect decorum until by some means they learned that the three who had

Opinions About The Story.

seen the picure in the United States According to persons who have and were asked their opinions last night, the picture contains nothing to which objection can be taken. Most of them describe it as a charming story, and say that the Brat reel, to which certain Italians object, is a fine story of the self (Continued on, nezi Golumn),

The flm "The Street Angel" WAS passed by the board of censors in Italy but was subsequently banned by order of the dictator, Mussolini, it is understood, and the board of censors dismissed.

Keep slender by wearing the right sort of clothes!" Such is the recipe advocated by the new school of thought born of the films, where effects are largely obtained by care- ful attention to lines. some good tips :--

THE TRUTH" ABOUT ---

VEGETARIANISM.

[BY A FOOD EXPERT.].

I am not a vegetarian, but I honestly believe that, with few ex ceptions, those foods which are of animal origin are inferior to the menu of the vegetarian. The term vegetarian, however, is frequently inapplicable to those who describe themselves as vegetarians,

It is curious that the foundations of the best vegetarian dishes are of animal origin. They include milk, butter, cheese, cream, and eggs. There is nothing superior to this group in the whole range of food- stuffs. The vegetarian, as. I have met him, would have the world be- lieve that he maintains health and strength on such foods as lentils, potatoes, nuts, fruit, cauli-flowers, and carrots.

Liying On Potatoes.

These are all excellent in their way; indeed, as the Danish Director of the Department of Nutrition bas shown, a healthy man can do a day's arduous labour on six pounds of rich potatoes.. I say rich, be cause there is" considerable differ- ence in the nutritious value of this vegetable, but even so it became necessary to provide a proportion of Eat.

I believe that there are no fruits superior to the banana and the grape, but the former rapidly nau- seates some people, or, as in the countries where it is predominant us à food, it causes distension. Ex- cellent, too, as are grapes, they are in many ways impossible as a domin ant food. It is true that those Japanese who live almost entirely on rice are able to perform con- siderable labour, as are the Sikhs in India:

*

11

Batter Than A Banquet.

Good wholemeal bread, perfect butter, a little cheese, cream, milk, and the orange or the grape in abundance are superior to a ban quot

I gladly concede to the vegetarian with his dairy produce and eggs the ability to work and to win. In the United States tests have been made is which both students and soldiers have been placed in competition, and fed in one case in the manner to which they had been accustomed, and the other upon a specially pre pared ration from which meat was excluded, with the result of which vegetarians have been proud, but there lice the sequel; milk and its products, like eggs, formed the basis of the diet.
