from most districts are good, al though inquiry at the moment is mainly for White and Grey Shirt inga and the slight allround ad- vance in prices asked by dealers has been readily paid and has not checked sales. We learn small sales of spring Fancies such as Bro- cades and Cords-have been made, but generally speaking the market for these seldom opens to any ex- tent until just before Chinese New Year; the level of prices for these spring goods is practically the same as last season and on the average this gives indentors a small margin of profit.

Cotton.

The local Cotton Exchange was closed for five days--December 29th to January 2nd, both days in- clusive. After opening, prices showed a small advance for Yarn sad slight decline in Cotton. American prices are slightly easier. Owing to the holidays there was very little business done with the Milla.

In their weekly report on China Cotton and Yarn, Messrs. J. Spunt & Co. write:-

Due to the New Year holidays intervening, we have had a short working week, during which very little business transpired, and price Auctuations registered within a very narrow range, being hardly affected by the declines in Ameri- can and Indian markets. The ab sence of any general demand for the raw material on the part of the mills as well as on the part of those. speculatively inclined, appears to have had very little infuence the current rates, which were main- ly due to the reduced receipts from the firmer prices in the interior towns together with the continued improvement in the Yarn Market.
