At this point things looked none to good for the Club, but Owen Hughes and Quick made an excel lent stand. They had a lot of ex- cellent stuff to contend with, but they usually managed to get the bad ball away for tour, and 145 was on the board when Owen Hughes got tangled up with a big leg break from Watch and wat bowled off bis leg. He played very free crieket, though at 14 he might have been taken in the deep off the same bowler from a very lolty drive. HOME FOOTBALL RESULTS,

NEW YEAR DAY: HOLIDAY PROGRAMME,

FIRST DIVISION LEADERS AGAIN. DRAW,

RANGERS DEFEAT CELTIC.

„A strenuous football season during the holidays closed on Tuesday to far as the English League teams are concerned. The Scottish beams were due for another full programme yesterday' which" will Anish the holiday programme and bring the League players back to their ordinary fixtures.on Saturday.

Southern Section teams were not engaged, on Tuesday, while fewer teams were out, particularly in the Second Division where, however, an extra match, Oldham v. Notta Forest, was played. Sheffield Wednesday, leaders in Division 1., again had to give away one point, this time to Huddersfield. Blackbura scored another success on their visit to Newcastle. Everton, at home, defeated Derby by four clear goals. Arsenal, who drew with the leaders on Saturday, were only able to score one goal at Sunder land who netted five. Division of points resulted in the Bury Leeds United and Manchester United v. Aston Villa matchen

Chelsea's stay at the top of Division II was short lived, as Middlesbro' went above them by winning against Tottenham. No change of any importance took place in the Northern Section leadership where Stockport took the points from Wigan in a close game.

The Scottish Rangers had a comfortable victory over their old rivals, Celtic. In 20 out of the 39 matches which the Rangers have played so far, they have dropped only two points in drawn . games. Unless they break down unexpectedly, they should again win the League and perhaps establish a new record over the one already set up by them last season.
