COTTON PIECE GOODS TRADE IN HONG KONG.

JAPANESE AND CHINESE.

The cotton piece goods trade is an important item in the export and import trade of the Colony Shipments in this line from Japan, Shanghai and Canton are sent here to be transhipped to various parts of South China, and the Malay Achipelago. The yearly value of this trade is nearly 40 milion dollars.

Formerly, there" was a keen com petition between the Japanese and Chinese, but owing to the Anti- Japanese Boycott. Japanese goods have declined by about 60 per cent. of their total volume of business.

The Chinese cotton piece goods trade in the Colony is to a large. extent in the hands of two big firms the Ling Sui and Tai Hing Native cotton piece goods Importer and Exporter. The Chinese commodity comes from Shanghai and Canton and is transhipped to Hoi How; Arnoy, Swatow and ports of the Straits Settlements. This trade formerly, was none too flourishing, but since the Boycott it bas done better hut Chinese merchants de clare that this is due less to the boycott but to improvements both in the quality of the Chinese com- modity and in methods of transport handling, etc.
