Yet
American citizens will await developments in the coming year with "especial intereat, because of the fact that White House very soon will be affording lodgement to a new President. Although the United States generally enjoying con- siderable prosperity, the country has its own peculiar and particular problems to handle, apart from its diplomatic, and economic relationa with European and Asiatic Powers. In these domestic matters, outsiders may take only general interest. but American influence in inter- national affairs looms very large these days, and the coming year may witness some interesting deve- lopments in this direction after the new President gets properly settled down.in" Washington. In Germany and France the "pickie" of 1929 is very like that of 1997, and, un- fortunately, without much prospect of 1929 bringing any great change. for the better. In Italy the new year sece Fascist control of the country more complete than it was twelve months ago, and in Russia we see the Soviet system still firmly established, and still struggling to make good and justify its exist ence In Japan there
appears to be a continuance of that conflict: between old and new idea; between advocates of mailed fist" methods and supporters of more rational and equitable dealing, which has marked the advent of many years, and may mark many more before the issue is finally decided. the world found itself in 1918 seems In short, tho "pickle in which

This day, to quote friend Buny's ed chain to run the twelve months" once more, time winds the exhaust-

modification since the days of the
Scottish poet. We are, indeed, rather doubtful as to what "time". really is; the future turns into the past by passing instantaneously through the present, and we become hopelessly confused in trying to define a torm which seems so simple until we stop to consider what it actually means. Rather than wrestle with such a problem, and on such a day as the first of a new year. let us content ourselves with the hope that 1999 will bring all that we hoped for twelve months ago, which, if not altogether unexpected, with none of those disappointment
were decidedly unwelcome.

Certainly, so far as this part of the world is concerned, the "pickle" in which we find ourselves ie not so bad to-day as it was twelve months ago. China has made con- siderable progress during the year towards that stability which is essential for general peace and prosperity. Within the last few daye we have learned that the Nationalist standard has been heist- ed in Manchuria, denoting one more step towards national unity
