The 35-ft. schooner which has just
been wrecked was bailt by Captain Drake from wood collected along the seashore at Seattle, and it was in this frail craft that he sailed across the Atlantic last year in fifty three days Since leaving Seattle he has covered some 25,000 miles in the space of two years and four months. He had intended to sail back to America by way of the Far East, via the Mediterranean and the Cape.
They took refuge in the bilges under the boiler, and for three hours were lying in oil and water while the flames roared above them. William Arthur James, one of the firemen, a Welshman, sang songs to keep up the spirits of his cam paniona.
