[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
Losnos. October 27th.
A discussion of considerable in- terest has been going on between Dean Inge and Lord Birkenhead on the salaries of public men. As rerently stated, Lord Birkenhead has resigned office as Secretary of State for India to undertake a business "appointment in the City. the reason assigned being that his official stary of £3,000 a year was not enough for him to live on. With his great abilities he will command twice or three times that income in the commercial world. There was a good deal of gossip about the re- siganticr in the Press, and the Dean of St. Paul's in an article in the Brening Standard boldly stated I n man is not content with £3,000 a year and the honeng of helping to govern the country he was probably dear, at £3,000 a year, and we had better let him go."
It is unwise to stand under erumbling scaffold, Russia, to-day has do exportable surplus of grain Her credit under a steadily" in- creasing adverse balance status ob- viously will become worse,

Dangers Of Travel,
of
A succession of railway mishaps in the last few weeks has created a certain amount of uneasinem în the public mind. There have been 32 people killed and 339 injured in this way since the beginning of the
present year, and it is a very bad and unusual record for British railwaye. Some of our lightheart- young aviators have been writ- ing to the papers to suggest that aging is safer than rail travel.

Lord Birkenhead's Reply. Lord Birkenhead has replied to this line of comment in a vigorous article, in the course of which he declares that the "Gloomy Dear" has himself exploited business to the uttermost. "I seem to remem- ber," says his Lordship, "our eritic justifying his own journalis- tic activities by the plea that he could not support his family upon his diaconal salary." He makes a shrewd thrust at Dean Inge by ns. serting that in Fleet Street he has heard many reports very gratifying to the Reverend Dean as a man of business. He was and is an astute argotiator of the very valuable material he has to sell. I suppose But considering the millions who that the Dean in one year makes as
