While passing through Stafford shire recently I was surprised at the behaviour of several flocks of sheep which I encountered on the road. On seeing & car approaching the shepherd, who would be walking behind his Rock, gare a shout, and all the sheep promptly packed them- selves neatly to the left of the road, allowing room for my outfit to pass by. This was pleasant change from the usual delay of two or three minutes. accompanied by a 'wild barking of dogs and shouting and gesticulating, which almost always happens when a Bock, of sheep is met.

I wish more shepherds would take the trouble to train their sheep in this way. I wonder whether similar methods would be effective with. cows, or is it rather too much to expect of the bovine intelligence?

MATTERS.

POT-HOLES ON CASTLE PEAK

ROAD,

Repairs to the Castle Peak Road have resulted in many fine stretches of road in which all potholes have been filled up. With regard to pot hales, one can always detect these bumps by the amount of oil which is dropped around them. Looking ahead is is sometimes possible to aca these well lubricated patches, and a little manoeuvring saves a masky jolt, and adds a few days to the life of the back tyres. There are some nasty, bumps on the Lai-Chi- Kok Road thanks to the railway tracks over the road. The first two, on the hill next to the Ginger Factory abreast of Shum-Shui-Po, are particularly annoying becausé even after passing over them count- lesa of times they are not easily avoided. As regards, the big bump over the railway track at the corner in Chuen Wan village a much easier passage will be made if the. corner is taken close in to the left. The buses usually neglect to pick out the best part and rumble over a little to the right.

SPARES FOR WHIPPETS AND

WYLLIS-KNIGHTS.

The new storage garage of the "Duro" at Kowloon, will contain a large assortment of spares for the motor cars for which this Garage are service Agents. They are the Overland, Overland Whip- pet and Wyllie-Knight cars. The sales of these cars is progressing by leaps and bounds, and the Agents have sets of spares to cor- respondent

SHELL" MOTOR-CYOLE

TEST.

We have received from the Asiatic Petroleum Company or illustrated report of the Shell Motor-cycle test" held in England in June, 1099. Stock models of many of the lead- ing mator-cycle firms of Great Britain were taken on a 2,000 mile run through England and Scotland The test began with a turn at maximum speed over a quarter mile stretch.

cycles were again sped over the quarter mile stretch without de case, the solo cycles and combina carbonising the engines. In each tion outfits exceeded the maximum speed claimed by the manufactures. And this after liberal lubrication for 2,000 miles!

The Egn. Sir Shou Son Chow has acquired through Messrs. A. Lung & Company, one of the new "45 Models of the latest Chrysler Cars This car was recently delivered to Sir Shou San Chow, who is im- mensely pleased with the comfort and performance of this car. Sir Chow was for years the owner of Studebaker model which gave him unfaltering and reliable service.

The new 73 "Sports, Phaeton Model "Chrysler Cats on the car ranks in Pedder Street commanded ne small amount of attention by the public.

On a motor-cycle, the same passage place need not cause any trouble even when taken at a good speed if this is borne in mind. Keep away from the centre, the pot-bols formed here by heavy motor trans- portation is growing deeper each day!

From here onwards, the road surface is without a deep pot-hole, until passing Shank's Bay (the first bathing sheds): The pot-hole in question is a few yards before the right hand corner, and is at least 4 inches deep. In fact the whole passage past the bathing sheds is very bumpy. A victim of the big pot-hole, will not forget it. On countless occasions, motor-cyclist have gone into sickening wobbles on account of this hole and it is hoped that the Roads Department, who have recently fielded up many of these bumps near Castle Peak, will sce to this one.

CASTLE PEAK CAFETERIA.

The Castle Peak Cafeteria is now undergoing a complete overhaul and it is hoped that it will be ready to accommodate bathers and motorists next summer in better manner than it did this year. It is a "very great pity that there is not in the New Territories, a single place where one many call for a much needed cup of tea or other refresh ment, after the long ride from Kowloon. Incidentally, the two en trances to Cafeteria för motor- cars are now almost complete while work has been done to beautify the Bitherto dead looking gardea.

OPENING OF SIDE-LANES WINS APPROVAL.

The opening of many hitherto "closed to traffic" side-lanes about the town has met with no small success. Cars have been seen to come and go quite safely, the Ise House Street hill to the Dairy Farm and Central Police Station being a very popular route. No doubt the Traffic Department will cadeavour to have more side-lanes opened to traffic in the Colony, as the present move has answered well.

NEW YAUMATI GARAGE.

An illustration of the growth of the motor trade in the Colony is shown by the many new Garages. In addition to the very efficient Duro Garage in Kowloon, and the newly opened Garage near the Star Ferry of Messrs. While on the subject of new cars and prices, it is to be doubted whether low priced cars are really clamoured for by the Motoring population.

Although it affords an oppor- tunity to the would-be-car owner with limited funds, lower prices mean less reliability, and length of life. Machinery and body-work of a car cannot be skimped without resulting in

a poor job.

Of the various locks or safety de vices which have been advocated from time to time, such as gear locks, steering locks and ignition locks, the latter alone has received аду considerable practical plication, and this, so it would seem, for the simple reason that it involves no complication, and title expense or manufacturing dim. culties, remarks The Motor. course, even so, it is not every up to-date car that has an ignition lock, and there is no question that many of the car thefts perpetrat ed during the
