CHRISTMAS PRESENTS FROM THE "PIONEER.

1.

The article last week giving suggestions for Christmas presente from the Pioneer Silk Store proved so helpful to a number of our readers that I went round the store again yesterday to try and find a few more suggestions. Here is the "result.

For A Man, For a man: A box of matching handkerchief and tie. This is quite safe to send Home and, if he dis trusts your taste, he need not wear them to save your feelings, since you won't be there to see. The colours are so eminently "quiet" that you might even risk giving a set to your husband or man friend who lives bere. A pair of pyjamas, if you know him well enough. They can be made to his measure in a few hours, or a silk shirt or socks.

For A Woman, For a woman bag, in plain or stamped leather, the latter for pre-

THINGS.

SEEN IN LOCAL SHOPS.

In WHITEAWAY, LAIDLAW's I saw some charming little pincushions for Christmas, on each of which a ing They are dressed in all sorts quaintly dressed cloth was atand- of fashions and materials, swans- down, silk, lace and cotton, and runt from $1.

Boudoir Lights.

I always enjoy visit to Felix, the happy little mascot, who presides over No. 7, Ice House Street, for there is always something fresh to see... Last week it was the Cisrai Bow hats, and this week hats, among other things again claimed lamp shades made in the form of FELIX has some exquisite boudoir my attention. There were among dolls with silken skirta. They are them some very apart evening bats all delicately coloured and beauti which are rather more sophisticated fully made. Others have an brim, of velvet, in black, or colour, over a soft gold soutache braid and sequin crown. One extremely at tractive model is a capeling of dull red and gold lamé with a Madonna blue feather bound round it.

WARM AND SMART.

TWEEDS ARE NOW WORN INDOORS:

The sketch shows three dresses in the new style which would be equally suitable for home or office wear. The skirts are all plain at the back, but godets or pleats at the sides or in front give sufficient fullness to take from the strain that pulls a straight." skirt out of shape if much sitting is indulged in.

W

Although godets are more practical than pleats for office wear, they should not be worn by short, thick-set women. "Flat pleats are much kinder to a dumpy figure, and if they are stitched along the edge of the folds in the new permanent" way they will "stay put" indefinitely.

The drets at the left, which is made from a combination of brown, beige, and yellow checked tweed with beige woollen stöckinette, has an interesting scarf callar eut in one with the front of the corsage. A string of amber beads makes a telling accent on this dress.

...

The flannel blouse worn with the tweed skirt on the middle figure has a collar and panel af the skirt material. The sleeves are gathered into knitted ribbed cuffe of wool to match the far- nel. Such cuffs, which have been a feature of golfing jackets for years, are being used extensively on woollen and tweed dressca of every description this season.

Tailored Sports Wear. The woollen suits aud, dresses which have been showing for the last fortnight in THE DOLLY VARDON HAT SHOP have most of them been mapped up, though more are ex- pected. They are extraordinarily attractive since each garment is carefully and perfectly tailored. There are left a few very nice dresses in fine jersey cloth in several designs, and three piece suits in a heavier knitted fabric. These suits are made up of skirt, jumper and sleeveless coat. The erat, is really cut on coat lines, not like & cardigan, and the effect is extremely smart and workmanlike.

Now Frocks For Old. In WHITEAWAY, LAIDLAW'S I saw a box of attractive lace collars and fronts. Most of them are in Paris or écru shades, though "some are white. Some of the lace is darned or embroidered with silk and gold threads, other pieces bave insertions of finely tucked net.

It is often possible to give new

life to an old dress by means by

a new collär, especially if the neck line is altered and brought up-to- date, and this box ought to give you several useful suggestion.

Silk Dress Lengths,

Some very delightful materials are now on show in the piece goods department of LANE, CRAWFORD'S including woollens, silks Ande velvet. I have written before of the bordered viyella which makes such charming coats and jumper suits, and this week I want to tell you about the silks, The first and great thing about them is that there is only one dress length in each colour, so that no one else can have a dress like yours. The pat terns are mostly the smart small. spot or conventionalised flower de- signs, and all the new

winter colourings are represented.

I found some very lovely silk velvet with a raised spot, in white | and in beige, which would make perfect evening cloaks; and also some silk coating material in both beige and black which is quite new, warm, and very amart..

A Red Window.

THE DOLLY VARDON HAT SHOP call- ed me inside on Wednesday by way of charming window display of scarlet bats, which looked gay and cbeerful on a wet day, Inside I learnt that another big shipment of hats, frocks, etc., is expected on the 20th, and saw that last week's well stocked sleeves had been pillaged by cager buyere. However, there are still mapy most attractive 'bats to be bad in all colours, the newest of which are simple sports felts with a fairly wide brim and a gros grain band. They have been specially created for actual sports wear, and are made of soft angora felt in several bead sizes, and colours.

A SWEET FOR COOLER DAYS.

In the furnishing department of WHITEAWAY, LAIDLAW'8, I saw this werk, some very lovely plain silk The plain ones are something quite particularly this week some smart vialet, were particularly attractive. Among the day hats I noticed colour, and a rose with a tinge of curtain nets, of which a maize

There are some very attractive Printed silk scarves, kerchief bags, soms made of felt to match squares, and triangles.
