Examinations "belong that class of discipline which the com- munity inflicts upon its juniors in order to stimulate them to the highest activity. The young people respond because of their sporting instinct, or the competitive spirit. which delights in self assertion and in conquering others-examiners and fellow candidates, True in India the students will often proud- ly describe himself as a failed B.A. or a failed matriculation candidate. He does not, so it is eaid, mean to imply that he is deficient in intellectual power, or that he should have credit rither for the arduous preparation or the courage in presenting himself for examina- tion. No, his object we are told is to announce that no one can pass a difficult examination' honestly: that it can only be done by acquainting oneself, with the questions before-) hand. It follows naturally that he deserves credit for his moral superiority in scorning to indulge in such a nefarious practice.

The examination craze has swept England where the numbers pre- senting themselves have multiplied enormously these last ten years, Mr. H. AL. Fragen and Sir MICHAEL SADLER have drawn atten- tion to the need for their reform, While recognising the necessitys of examinations, they have criticised them because they cramp the épecialised activities of the school which at present has to conform in its curriculum with an examination syllabus that allows but slight variety of choice. There is a danger of schools becoming stereotyped. and therefore lacking in vitality
