"PAGANISM CRY OF OLD

TIME PURITAN.

"SENSUOUS EXCITEMENT AT ALL COSTS."

11

Modern morals were attacked by the Rev. Bertram Smith, of Leeds, chairman of the autumn assembly of the Congregational Union of England and Wales, at the opening

meeting at Leeds. His subject was: "A society really Christian."

He acknowledged that drunken-

ness was far less prevalent, and that there had been in advance is other directions, but, he said, there was still a dark background.

FLANT STREET The social virtues of the gramo- phone record were among the points in its favour referred to by Mr. G. R. He urged that the serious position of some our great industries was no reason for neglecting opportuni- ties in luxury trades.

Films, gramophones, artificial silk, cheap motor cars, and broad- casting were the things in demand to-day, and England must march with the times. In his view the gramophone, the kinema, and broadcasting would do more to stop the exodus from rural areas. to congested cities than anything.

Mr. Hall Caine is" chairman of the new company, formed for the purpose of supplying to the public & double-sided record of full size. at la. 3d. The company has con- centrated on the technical side of record production, and claim that its records will be equal to the best on the market. They will be con fined at first largely to jazz selec tions.

In the company's studio there was a novel performance by what is called the phantom orchestra. The instruments were all there as if the band had just gone out for refreshment, but the phantom or chestra bas no instrumentalists.

Electric (L). casting hotels and dance halls and Recreio v. Civil Service (L), ture is frankly un-Christian, a society in which the most essential services are scarcely rewarded with | a living wage, and the greatest for tunes can be won by its idlest and rost useless members!

"Sunday is becoming little less. than a weekly bank holiday, and, what is perhaps worse, numbers of men and women with genuine social enthusiasm, confess that they have little room for organized religion. Unless the Church genuinely Catho lic establishes the society really Christian, nothing can prevent our civilisation following the old civil isations into decay and oblivion."

The minister then spoke of those who sought satisfaction through the senses the youngster at the sea side clamouring for an ice-cream, the fair maiden coveting an exper- sive box of chocolates, the hotel tounger ordering his cocktail and sigur, men and women generally desiring rich food to eat and fashionable clothes to wear, and motor-ears to whirl them from place to place."

In presenting the report, Professor Rappard, who is himself a Genevere, proudly, re- ferred to the almost miraculous manner in which the democratic city, always jealous of its indepen dence and respectful of the will of its benefactors, had in 15 days agreed to accept the offer of an exchange.
