NOTES OF THE WEEK.
Noises That Are Diminishing.
Nearly every part of the chassis of motor vehicle enn at some time in its existence constitute a source et noise. There are, of course, certain noises which cannot be re- duced to any considerable extent, as, for instance, the whirr which ateurs between the tyres and the road, but these are, in the main, not really objectionable or great in volume.
It is, however, often minor items which are the worst offenders, and. n many instances, it is the com parative silence of the

How would you proceed wheels. That is a question which not every driver could answer without paus ing to consider and it is often a very pressing one in Hong Kong.
My own plan, says a writer in The Light Car and Cycle-car, is to engage first gear, keeping my right foot hard down on the brake, and then to open the hand throttle and slowly engage the clutch, easing the brake as the clutch begins to "lite."
This gives one a certain and safe restart, out calls for soine dexterity.
their attachments have at last been Freated seriously by motor-cycle manufacturers. There were many machines which had achieved so satisfactory a degree of silence that it was possible to stand next to the driver with an engine running and to converse without raising the voice. The modern motorcycle is by no means the noisest vehicle on the roads. This makes good read ing. It shows that the Home Secre- tary's warning issued two years ago has been taken seriously, says foter | Cyrling" -

Chummy Saloons. There is quite a vogue just now ladies on quite big chassis. Such bodies on chassis vary, eny's The Light Car and Cycle-car, from the big 45 hp. Renault to the smallest of light ears, whilst Major Segrave has given the idea his hissing by allowing his name to i e attached, to such a modei pro- duced by a well-known concern.
The indications are that these hybrid bodies, which leave room for

Why Not Delimlose? When will cellulose finishes come into wider use for interior Attings and external parts such as doar handles, imitation landaules irons and similar parts? If we are to believe what we are told by these who make and sell many cellalose lacquers, says The Light Car and Cycle-car; there are "to-day plenty of these finishes which are sub stantially proof against cracking and scratching and which are not damaged by "the heat of the sun or exposure to damp..
On many 1920 saloons there are a great deal too many polished wood mouldings and fittings which will get shabby before the cars have been on the road for long, whilst we all know how impossible it is to keep bright work looking well unless, like the radiator, it is reasonably get-at-able. Such parts should be cellulosed, and this is a develop ment to which
manufacturers should pay attention.
The Safe Sidecar, Which is the most dangerous type of vehicle, the car. or the motor-cycle and sidecar It is commonly believed, of course, that there are far more accidents in con- nection with motorcycle cambian tions than there are with cars, but figures go to show exactly the reverse. says Motor Cycling. In the course of a letter to the Press last week Comdr. F. P. Armstrong, secretary of the Royal Automobile Club, pointed out that during 1997 the proportion of fatal accidents to fehicles registered was 1 to 1,201 in the case bi matar-cycle.combina tions and 1 to 379 in the case of cars. The respective figures in con uection with non-fatal accidents were 1 to 38 and 1 to 21. As Com- mander Arstrong pointed out, ac eldent statistics are necessarily of a rather hit-or-miss character, but, even so, the sidecar is clearly reveal ed as being practically twice as saf as the ear...
