SEQUEL HEARD IN SUMMARY COURT.
DIVERS PAID BETTER THAN LAWYERS?
It will be remembered that the s.s. Keekow, a West River boat, was sunk on June 10th, this year, and thas she was ultimately salvaged Nothing was known then, what it cost the owners to have her brought to the surface again, or what risks those engaged au the work encountered. All these facts were brought to light yea terday when the Wo Hing Firma, salvage contractors, sued the Tai Hong Steamship Company, Limited, for the sum of $956.30, being the balance due for work done, and provisions supplied be tween June 18th and June 20th, in connection with the work.
In the course of the hearing, it was given out that divers in England might make as much as £3,000 to £4,000 a year. In Hong Kong they charge 850 a day for work in the harbour, and outside of the harbour limits, it was regarded as quite reasonable. if they charged double the fee,
These figures were quated by Captain G. D. Arthur, of Messrs. Carmichael and Clarke, who was called to give expert "evidence. Commenting on the remuneration, Mr. Rus inid: "I don't know why we aren't all divers, it is better than the law."
In this action Mr. C. A. S. Russ? appeared for the defendant firm. and Mr. W. D, Owen was for the plaintiff firm..

An estimate was accordingly went few days later but was rejected, Defendants bad in the meanwhile obtained a cheaper estimate from another firm, and after working for days, plaintiffs were told to cease work. Plaintiffs then sent in their bill for the work done, and, added Mr. Owen, the only dispute before the Court was whether the charges onde were reasonable or not.
Spoke An Uncouth Tongue. Mr. Russ disagreed and told his Lordship that his clients and the plaintiffs had agreed to a specific sum of money to be paid for the preliminary work. Plaintiffs had been paid $414, which was good pay for what had been done. Defend. ants gave the contract to another firm because the work done by the plaintiffs was "frightfully bad, Mr. Russ addeti: “They employed a lot of coolies who spoke an un- couth tongue, and it was like the Tower of Babel. Everyone was thoroughly muddled, and my clients got someone' elec. After having been sacked, as was characteristic of human nature, plaintiffs put in an enormous bill though they were only entitled to be paid the agreed

Continuing, Mr. Russ pointed out that pumps or divers cost between $400 and $500 to buy, while the plaintiffs charged $70 a day for Their use. That was an enormous proft.

Called to give expert evidence, Capt. C. D. Arthur said that he was engaged by the owners of the Kuch to make an inspection of the wreek and to give his opinion as to whether the vessel was worth salving. Ile did so and advised the ownere to have her brought to

There was more risk attached to inside work because the men had no electric lights and had to do everything by the sense of touch."

There was more risk for divers working in the spot where the ship sank, than in the harbour: He would consider it reasonable if diver was paid at least 50 per cent. more.
Witness was also of the opinion that $140 a day for two divers, as charged by the plaintiffs, was quite reasonable. He also thought that the charge of 896.00 for the pre- visions during the nine days' work for about 30 inen was fair. MALARIA IN KOW
LOON TONG?
DISEASE ATTACKS FOUR IN ONE FAMILY,
ONLY ONE CASE OFFICIALLY KNOWN
The alleged prevalence of malaria in Kowloon Tong Estate was dis- cussed yesterday at the fortnightly meeting of the Sanitary Board. It was stated by the Medical Officer of Health that only one case had been brought to his notice and in that case four members of the same household were attacked by the disease. Three of them con tracted malaria of the benign ter tian type and a fourth had subter- tian, OT the so-called malignant bype.
The discussion was the result'ani questions of which Mr. J. P. Braga had given notice to Dr. G. W. Pepe (M.O.H.).

In this case three members of one house- hold had contracted malaria of the benign tertian type, a fourth had contracted the subtertian or, so- caled, malignant type.
Can the prevalence of the dis- ease be attributed in part to the delay on the part of the Government in constructing proper drainage?
Dr. Pope: In my view it is very desirable in an area such as that occupied by the Kowloon Tong Estate that, training and draining should be undertaken early (and
preferably before the erection of habitations) with a view to minimis ing the risk of malarial infection.
