upon.

Dr. C. T. Wang states that conversations were gatisfactory to both sides. Opinions were freely discussed and the conference will be resumed.

CONFERENCE IN PARIS.

PARIS, Oct. 20th. The New York Herald (Paris edition) states that the conference Letween M. Poincare, Mr. Churchill and Mr. Parker Gilbert, Agent General of Reparations' payments, agreed to fix Germany's debt to the allies within practicable limita at sum well below 132 milliards of marka, decided on under the Lon don Agreement of 1921.

The Deuvre understands that Mr Churchill emphasized that the British Government would reject anything which might appear to be in the nature of pressure upon America or even simply an appeal to American generosity,

They now.. seek the approval of Italy, Bei gium, Japan and it is possible that a. Conference to discuss the matter will meet in Berlin in December with a semi-official American ob- server present.

Mr. Edwardes to-day also refuted the allegation that he ever closed the port of Canton, painting out that this incident occurred eight months after his departure.

His alleged opposition to the Nationalist Government, Mr. Ed- wardes described as without foundation and baseless, pointing out that the Customs Service is a national organisation functioning for the financial credit of China as a whole. There could be no ques- tion of any member of the Customs giving any assistance to one fac- Bional Government against another. The allegation that he had done. his best to hinder the aspirations of the Nationalist Clovernment to tariff autonomy, Mr. Edwardes described ag equally without foundation.

I have long realised," he said, that in order to restore China's

financial credit and to assist in the formation of a stable government it is essential that the Customis revenue should be increased." "Mr. Edwardes added: "It is well known that I have continued to make suggestions towards the attainment of tariff autonomy by gradual stages, which will restore China's financial credit without endangering the volume of trade."

MEMORIAL ON THE SOMME,

RUGBY, Oct. 19th. Next Sunday a moving little ceremony will take place pear legs boeufs on the Somme. A simple granite cross bas been erected at the head of a sunker road leading into Lesboeufs replacing the rot ting wooden croes which was put up by the British Guards Division in memory of their comrades after the two great battles on the Somme in 3016.

One hundred and thirty officers and men of the present Guards Division, the Grenadiers, Cold- streams, Scots, Irish and Welsh, will be drawn up round the cross to assist in its dedication which will be performed by the Reverend Pat McCormick, Rector of Saint Martins-in-the-Fields, London, who. was Senior Chaplain to the Guards Division in 1910.

Sir Major-General

Geoffrey. Fielding, who commanded the Guards Division in the Somme bat tles, will be present, also the Earl of Cavan, rho commanded the Fourteenth Corps in which, the Guards served.

Memories will be recalled of 7,000 Guardsmen who died in the tragic month of September, 1916, in action at Ginchy and Lesboeufs and of how the Guards, helped for the first time by tanks, stormed forward in progressive assault and of bow Colonel John Campbell of the Coldstreams led his men with bunting horn and won the Vic toria Cross for great gallantry.
