MODERN WOMEN HEALTHIER.

NO ILL EFFECTS FROM WORK AND SPORT.
The physical and psychical effects on women of their enhanced activity in public life are being studied. most exhaustively by experts in eugenics and hygienies, and the. problem seems to be of such serious nature that opinions are as yet rarely, offered. The im poverishment of the middle classea in consequence of the war and the inflation of the currency, the advance of technical aids in the household, and the preponderance of women in the population have forced many more women to earn their living than formerly.

It is even more noteworthy that during the past summer semester one of every ten students in Ger ITLAR universities was woman. The total number of students in the twenty-three universities in this sentester was 101,436, of whom 10.425 were women. At Berlin Univer- sity alone there are 1.319 female students, at the Munich University 1,079, at Bonn 737, at Freiburg 303, and so on. The faculty preferred by women is that of medicine, and to a lesser degree they devote them- selves to modern philology and

SOLICITOR'S TRIBUTE TO CITY POLICE.
Alfred Spackman, aged 35, porter, was charged on remand at the Guildhall before Mr. Alderman Neal, with an offence in Panyer- alley, Paternoster row.
"The defence was that it was a case of mistaken identity,
Chief Inspector Arthur Hopkins, who took the charge at Snow-hili police station, said that when told what the allegation was he sent for the matron and left her to inter- view the two girls who had made the charge, all the other parties withdrawing. Subsequently the girls said they were prepared to charge Spackman after the gravity of what they alleged had been pointed out to them..
Mr. Fail (defending): Spackman gave you all the information you asked for 7-Yes.

The two girls gave evidence, and said Spackman was "like the man" who insulted them.
