The coats for the Autuma season are a surprise. They are quite unlike anything we have been accus tomed to and unlike those designed for the really cold weather. At first sight you would take them for very charming tailored afternoon dresses, and indeed many of them are two-piece affairs with a coat worn over its own slip frock. Even the coats for motoring or less formalwear have something of the allare and line of a dress.

Pamela's collection gives an ex- cellent view of what is correct for autumn wear. The coats are all model garments and come from houses with big names, such as Worth Jenny, Chanel, etc.

Jenny is represented by a sports or motoring coat of light beige blanket cloth made with no revers and a simple upstanding collar. The interest is centred in a geor- gette scarf of the same tone edged with gold galon and threaded through the collar. The galon is repeated on an ornamental wing which stands out from just above the cuff,

From Worth there is a really lovely coat dress of pearl grey Katakla. It is out in redingote style with a chu collar of flesh pink crêpe de chine with kilted frills. The culla arc of the same material. The coat, which is cut all in one, fastens at the waist with a jade buckle, and is trimmed with up.. pliqué circles of its own material.

Somewhat similar though perhaps more practical is a coat dress from Bernard of leaf brown crepella. It has a kilted skirt and the 'hip line is marked by 3 belts of the material fastened at one side by steel buckles,

fits close up to the neck the tie collar also having a steel buckle.

Chanel has sent a two-piece of elephant crepella and crepe de chine. The cont, which has no revere or collar, is worn open sad belted round the hips with suède. Vader it is seco a very smartly tailored dress of crêpe de chine which has a knife pleated front panel in the skirt. The top is cut like a skirt blouse, with severe revers and smoked pearl buttons. Aa interesting feature is the cat which gives two. liues, one at the normal waist and the other four inches above, to give the fashion- able high waisted redingate effect without sacrificing the long line.

In Lane, Crawford's I was look ing at some shoes which have just arrived. The bulk of the Autuma shipment came a fortnight ago and 1 described the new styles to you then. Among those which arrived this week, 'are single strap shoes in pearl and oystor glace kid for after- noon wear in simple pretty style; and a smart pinky "beige glacé kid model which has an instep tongue made like a ribbon of the kid knot- ted in the centre of the strap with the two ends lying just on the

front of the shoe.

Walking shoes include a stone beige saadel trimmed with basket work insets, and a cut out sandel of caramel kid.

For the evening I saw a gold kid shoe with a vamp and heel of gold brocade; plain gold kid; and pale

The cretonne coats shown in the sketch are examples of the type of wrap which are being work at garden parties and other dressy functions.
